Female gaze comes into play too. Fujo and Yume fantasies put off men because is almost a purely female behavior. While men tend to objectify woman, woman tend to humanize males, so the way we engage with content differs and that's why our view of the Oshi is sexual but also strongly romantic.
It's a big reason why many aspiring male Vtubers fail to grow a female audience. They don't like to engage with Fujo/Yume content or engage with it from at least an empathetic point of view, and thus fail to understand the real appeal of a cute boy, their first mistake.

Yeah, adding onto this, I think genuinely the best thing you can do to figure out what they're doing and why it works is, sincerely and from the bottom of my heart, watch their content and engage with their communities. "I'm new to vtubers, what drew you to this one? I think he's interesting!" will go a long way to opening up a dialogue. Is the vtuber doing something that makes you cringe, makes you uncomfortable, makes you embarrassed? That's fair, but it's very likely that willingness to go the extra mile is what sets them apart. Hot take: While I do like casual interactions like every other normal fujo, I enjoyed the blatant fujobaiting that we got from the Niji boys in their early days. I don't even think they did it on purpose right off the bat. It started with Vox and Mysta, but Mysta in particular. I think he was doing it legitimately just to be funny at first, but then saw the clips of that part of the Minecraft collab went viral and he started doing it more. That's just my guess since he was such a huge numberfag back then. Vox did it as well and then in came Shoto doing the same. It got annoying after a while because of how in-your-face it was, but I enjoyed being catered to for once even if it was in a way that most fujos don't really like. It was just nice to have someone be thinking "I want this audience and my attention is on this audience, I will do what makes them happy." I don't feel that I will get over the whole Leo thing soon. In three weeks he stole my heart like no other Chuuba did. Completely agreed anon, I've always had a problem with how fake and forced some of the EN fujobaiting was, I'm glad I decided to give JP a try because I really prefer their way of interacting.
