Yeah baking is one of those things that can go haywire if your measurements are out 5-10%.
That's an easy mistake to make with things like spoons if you don't have a proper measuring spoon. Typical spoons are unevenly shaped, so measuring from the tip in a 1/3 is not the same volume as what the spoon actually can hold.
