No one does this, not even the ao3 author. Pretty much everyone takes characterization from streams or clips and treats the 'official lore' as a foundation to make shit up/create their own interpretation.
As for fan lore/rrats, it's honestly up to the writers themselves. For the most part we use their 'real' age/implied age rather than the lore ages given but /wg/ isn't homogenous enough to really have anything consistent other than the 'usual setting' being "Tokyo, 20 minutes into the future, chuubas look like their avatars off camera

Oh, that's definitely a possible explanation sometimes. But when it's very plot relevant information it will make the characters look stupid, and the reading experience more frustrating.
It's like how unlikely historical events wouldn't be seen as realistic if they were a story; many plot conveniences were necessary for Genghis Khan to go from escaping his imprisonment to being the ruler of the largest land empire in history.

Cheating in Japan is way more common. We are looking at their plots from outside eyes. There's a famous saying from Japanese women, "if you want sex get a girlfriend". Honestly you sound like you need to get out your first draft without doing any editing then get to editing it to look good. The habit of editing in situ is slow and is basically locked at the kind of editing that should be reserved for the last things you do before publishing since it'll mostly be about wording, details and grammar. When a major edit could clear out that work altogether since editing needs to go top-down from the plot level. Which means you really shouldn't waste your time editing the first pass to look good since that could get wiped out when you edit how a scene goes entirely.

It was a surprisingly interesting story. The fic reminded me of the feeling when someone has a crush on a person but they dont know someone has a crush on them. Here's my interpretation of the story: a teamate who frequents the Ina thread notices the artstlye and filename of an anon who frequently posts their part and deduces that they're a girl (probably from the artstyle). The next part of the fic explains that after a break the thread becomes more active again but the writer doesn't see the girl's art anymore so concludes that they've moved on. The final part where the writer states that they interact directly with the girl either means that they found the girl on discord somehow or that he doesnt want to bring it up in the thread. Overall, very engaging despite its short length. I wonder if the writer still browses this general.

I really enjoyed this story. It was well-written and had a good mix of smut, love and cute family slice of life - as befits the genre.

The best thing you can do is probably work with environmental storytelling. I assume there's a base in which the mechs are held, so have physical things around the base that tell about the state of things; state-sponsored posters, things being broken, stuff like that.
