I think it either has to do with the channel location itself or the viewers themselves being from Asia. I don't think it's a coincidence that the largest "EN" streams from both HoloEN and NijiEN involve Asian tourists from Japan, SEA, and TW/CN. Stuff like Syobon, streams during JP/CN primetime, and the current anemic numbers for the EN non-JP audience (especially during NA hours) don't match up with the meteoric rise of JP vtubers since late 2021. As the person who’s been bringing attention to this the past 1-2 weeks I’m happy people are at least giving it thought that something might be wrong right now with the algorithm/recommended/site in some fashion. People want to point at specific streams to say “hey look everything is okay” but there’s a massive difference between your everyday stream and a stream where fans mobilize completely outside of youtube.

Those streams were still pulling 70-100k views in 4-5 hours a stream. Ever since true “grim” days have happened, guess what? However, the problem is that it's being masked by seasonal recline, a lull in activity from HoloEN, and just general ass content recently. So it's hard to say how much of it is algo changes, but the VOD reduction is somewhat telling. It feels like the only non-JP vtubers getting growth anymore are shorts spammers like filian and somehow Pippa.
A lot of people will just bury their heads in the sand because "JP is doing well" (nevermind anomalies like sub growth completely cratering) but there is something seriously wrong happening overall right now.
