How do you guys come up with a premise for a design? I understand the general sentiment is to base it around your personality, but when it comes to ways I could describe myself, I blank.
For reference, I intend on doing primarily pre-recorded content, video essays on history, song covers, and some other miscellaneous videos. In the rare occasion I stream, if I do at all, it would be zatsudan content.

Hard to say, i have an infinite amount of characters in my head, a lot of places, scenarios, archetypes. every time i play a new game, watch a new movie i get a hundred new ideas on what character could be cool and keep mixing things up to keep it fresh. My vtuber design is one of the "main characters" of one my of stories and while i don't write or do anything like that, this is an excellent outlet because i get to roleplay the character out on stream. It doesn't even really relate to me, it's more just a character that i created and that i love to play out... like D&D basically, but with the personality overlapping a lot with mine.

As for how you would be able to do that... video games or other media like movies or anime would be ideal. You see a lot of characters and you could think about "how would i write this character". You could even take something like Naruto, look at the character archetype and write something that isn't reminiscent of the source. As for the design... same thing applies, just with the visual aspects. My character is JRPG main character trope character, so i looked at all the JRPG protags that exist and then some, and pieced it together from there. The visual doesn't come as naturally to me as the personality does (because i'm not an artist), but it's not impossible.

what I did was just look at designs that I like and picked parts that I wanted. It helps if you can draw a little so you can visualize your design to see if it works or doesn't, but if you can't there are plenty of cheap artists on skeb and artistsnclients to help you get designs made.

For me it was a transition of my appearance in my youtube videos (previously sprite based) to something in Live2d that looks like the same character.

There was a bit where I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep my character looking like myself BUT it fits a theme that works with my goals, so despite having a couple other ideas I stuck with what I knew because every thing lined up.

When developing a character, especially a character you are going to play, you have to consider some ideas as you figure out who they are and what they look like. I'll list out the order you might want to think things through..

1. Interests - What are your interests? These are things you LOVE and care about. You could talk about this stuff for hours (because you probably will). Write them all down and see if there's any connections. Do your interests and preferred topics fit a theme? Could you get creative and make them fit? This won't give you too much direction on your design. Yet.

2. Theme - Your theme determines the world of your character. Do you like sci-fi? See if you can't give yourself a role in that setting that incorporates your interests. You like tactical, combat shooting stuff? Maybe you're a space merc. Maybe you like more intellectual stuff? How about a exploring research scientist boldly going to new worlds? Does none of your interests seem to fit? That's fine, you can be something like a space dock worker with eclectic interests (that happen to be your real ones.) Fantasy, early civilization, space, some sort of cyberpunk. Go for it! Is there a theme in a piece of media you like that you can use without being too obvious? Consider that.

3. Voice - Whats your vocal range? Can you do any voices? Are they voices you would want to do 3 or 4 hours at a time several days a week? What do you think someone in that themed world who has your performance voice look like?

4. Appearance - You've got an idea of who your character is ideologically, what they sound like and the world that no doubt shaped them, now it's the last step. Whether you draw it yourself or hire someone to do it it's just a matter of looking at pictures and seeing if they fit..You got this!

If that all sounds too much and you can also do what a lot of vtubers do and just be "shitposter in cartoon costume" but I would discourage that. Then again that seems to work for a lot of people so what do I know? I think having a strong theme though is good as it helps guide you as an entertainer and gives you some mental distance between yourself and your character, even if the distance isn't very wide.

I told the artist two words for a concept and then clarified any questions, let them go to town. As the design was put into stone, I gave pointers and my opinions honestly.
The more I try to visualize something specific, the harder it is for me to feel satisfied with someone else's take on it, so I trust whoever is in charge of the art since I suck at it.

If you are doing the art yourself, then just pick something that you like, and worst case scenario you can do changes as you keep going. Nobody will really give a shit as long as it's "you", and even then some might not care.

I want to try to keep it to one link per vtuber. The list by itself is already getting a bit unwieldy, and remembering to update or change info located in more than one place is going to quickly get a bit too complicated for me. Now as for deciding whether to list the twitch or youtube will be kind of tricky in some cases. But if there is an obvious focus in activity on one or the other channel I will probably choose the more active one. If the YouTube mostly has archived streams on it then I will probably list the twitch. If streaming is done simultaneously on both channels then I will probably default to the twitch unless the YouTube is obviously much bigger.

Actually debut date was one of the next things I was planning to add next. I think its going to be fairly inaccurate for many of the people on the list though. Sullygnome seems like it doesn't track new accounts very well, so ill have to go off of people's twitter or possibly archived youtube posts to see when a person's debut was. Additionally I know a decent amount of people on the list streamed at least a little bit before vtubers even really existed, whether that was with a cam or what is hard to say, but ill have to figure out around what time they started using an avatar.

Sorry, that data is unreliable. I have to manually refresh that information. I can only do it a few times a day at most. The other problem is that sullygnome is also fairly inaccurate in keeping track of who is and isn't streaming, especially for some of the smaller channels. It will display some people as streaming for hours after they stop, and occasionally completely miss people who have short streams.

Theres not a whole lot I can do about either problem. I was previously looking into creating a website that would host accurate information, but such a website while certainly possible is likely beyond my abilities right now.

However there is one thing you can do yourself, if you do want to refresh the spreadsheet yourself you can actually just create a copy of the entire page (File -> make a copy)and just delete the info in that column and undo the deletion and it will fetch a fresh copy of the information from sullygnome, just note it does take a few minutes to do it all.
