How did you guys figure out what design you want for your avatar? I'm stuck on thinking of a design, even though I have a rough idea of how I want to act.
Do you just go through boorus for similar characters and just mash them all together? Maybe picrew?

Picrew helps more with specifics, like your haircut or face shape or something. Boorus, I've found, are mostly good for outfits. Once you've got a general idea of what you wanna be they're great, but it sounds like you don't have that yet.
Personally I came up with a concept (D&D-ass ranger) that matched my vibe/character and went trawling the Google images from there. I had an easier time than most cause I was starting from a mythological gimmick, so I had some existing interpretations to work with. You could try looking around for a booru tag that appeals to you (and matches your vibe) and go from there.

If you're having problems with a physical design, maybe try answering basic questions (like the ones I laid out below) to help flesh out your character conceptually.
>Where are you from?
>What was growing up like?
>Why did your persona choose chubbin of all things to do with their time?
>etc
Or, if you're at a loss for those kinds of questions you dive into emotional stuff.
>Humor type?
>Biggest Regret?
>Greatest Strength/Weakness?
>etc
There are a billion questions you can google to help you come up with a solid backstory, and once you have that the character should be practically screaming at you how to design them. Now, YOU need to know this stuff but don't go throwing your galaxy brain backstory and every squalid detail at your viewers. (Unless you intend to do some hardcore RP.)

I, for one, fell in love with a design concept from a monstergirl doujin. Over several years I ended up writing a novel-length backstory and an entire sci-fi universe that supports her existence. I've been saving up my pennies (literally) and I'll soon be throwing my hat into the vtubing.

I hope this was helpful.

hi elliott!! i've always enjoyed your streams personally, as you have quite a knack for teaching and the right temperament for it.

one thing that does put me off watching the whole thing however is the graphics. your model is great and i enjoy the blackboard aesthetic, but the purple background is almost the exact same color as your model's clothing. it really just blends you into the background. in general the layout is quite plain and doesn't hold your attention for long enough. even an animated gif like odette has on her stream would be helpful to contrast the slower content.

i'd also recommend linking a discord at the end to host 'office hours' or some kind of viewer engagement following your stream. especially since you're teaching, encouraging viewers to ask you questions off stream can probably help your retention rate and keep your community alive.

Thanks for the outfit advice! Filtering through danbooru for character pegs tends to lead me down hentai before finding any normal images. So maybe searching for outfits instead of characters makes sense.

Stream on Twitch if you want growth, YouTube is a JP HoloLARP meme and you will get nowhere if you don't have corporate backing to drag you out of pajeet spaghetti code algorithm hell. Dozens of talented streamers have tried their hand at being an indie on YouTube, and its led to stagnation and an eventual jump to Twitch every single time. All of HoloEN used Twitch as their streaming platform of choice in one way or another before getting signed
Don't sign up for a fucking small agency, they are the equivalent of what Networks were in the early days of YouTube and will sign you into slavery, take a massive cut of any profit you make, barely promote you and then leave you with nothing once your contract is up and they snatch the model back from you, or force you to pay out the nose for the IP after becoming emotionally attached to the character
If you sign up for a reputable agency, get your contract looked over by a lawyer who deals in contract law so you don't get completely fucked in the ass. Don't let the glitz and glitter of the "making it big" dream blind you to a bad deal

I didn't know that, thanks anon I'll look into it a bit more. I assumed using both platforms would just be troublesome for viewers, as opposed to having everything in the one place. Are there tools or sources you use to get this info, or is it just speculation based on the successes of others?

Also would streaming on twitch kill any chance of an overseas audience? I'm hoping to make a mark on the JP audience, and it doesn't seem like they're based entirely on twitch. I suppose using translated youtube clips with a more favourable algorithm could make up for that though.

This is anecdotal from the last 6 months of watching the indies from /wvt/ grow, but if you ask most of them they can back up the claims.
You should also completely give up on your idea of gaining any traction in the JP market. They do not care about western streamers for the most part, and their market is more saturated than ours is with options for who to watch. I have seen indies lean into trying to pander to JPs with "learning Japanese" streams and other similar pandering, and it winds up being hours upon hours of effort put in for the return of one or two JP chatters showing up if you are lucky, and then never coming back after the one or two streams. On top of that JP pandering is a debuff for your English speaking audience, so you depress your numbers for no gain

That's fair enough. Was just wondering since you seemed to know a lot of info. Even if it is baseless speculation, it's still useful in some way.
>You should also completely give up on your idea of gaining any traction in the JP market.
Not sure If I can do that desu. Part of the reason I want to become a Vtuber is to make friends and to talk about games with people from all over the world. Lots of games I like are made in Japan, so the idea of getting overseas viewers' feelings on certain games sounds really appealing to me, even if it is going to bite me in the ass numbers wise.

Also speaking of games, it seems like my choice of debut games isn't very popular. Might have to do some brainstorming for other things to play, but thanks for the feedback and help anons.

If you'd really like some advice while keeping the grey-black-white design going on, I'd tell you to look at Oozora Subaru's first and second costumes. Her first is very bright and colorful, but lacks an overall centerpiece to draw attention. Her second is very grey, but has some gold accessories and highlights, what's more, her eyes act as the most colorful part of the costume which draws attention towards her face. Where she had too much color in her first, you have a similar problem of too little color. I'd say to make the bulk of it a dark greyish color, while adding blackish and whitish pieces here and there (almost like bits of actual salt and actual pepper maybe?). Try to find a kind of centerpiece for the outfit as well.

I'm also told that some popular facecam streamers do "lore streams" where they tell stories. I've never seen one but you could look into it. I think that's more akin to the "clean break between in-character streams and out-of-character streams" thing you mentioned.

absolutely lmao. What's the point of a debut if no one knows you exist and nobody is excited about it. There's basically two 'successful' camps when it comes to debut:
- Shitload of networking on twitter reddit, any site where you think you can shill yourself. Talk to other VTubers, get an audience and boom, finally have your debut.
- Start streaming without a debut. In this case, you should still be doing your networking reps, but you can be a bit more lax about it. Produce content, share clips, create engagement, and once you feel like you have a decent enough audience you can "Properly" debut.
If you're not doing either of those things, your debut is going to fail. No questions asked. Not that doing those things means necessarily you're going to have a good debut, but they definitely help.

The first benefit is special announcments in their community Discord (makes sense, over 4k members). Their second benefit is a reserved seat at Meet & Greet tables (why would a chuuba send their roommate to cons?). The third one mentions that you get to work together with them (duh) and has tons of spelling errors.

This is super weird because it doesn't mention any requirements other than "stream at least once a week". No mention of what kind of work you're expected to collaborate on. No sort of stuff about language or games.

- Tread through the #VTubers Hashtags
- Participate in PNG shares (This part sucks)
- Follow trends (This part really sucks. Deal with it)
- Follow VTubers of similar size
- Comment on their posts (Don't comment on every post, but try to organically grow closer)
- Get other VTuber's stream chats
- Don't just lurk. Actively comment. (The goal isn't for you to actively hog up the comment box. But you should try and participate as much as you're able. IMPORTANT: Make sure not to make it about you. At the end of the day it's the other VTuber's channel. All you want to do is get your name out there naturally).
- POST. CONTENT. It doesn't literally have to be streams. But making memes, creating mini-videos, making art, posting funnies, etc. to have your followers engaged is key. You should be ideally tweeting something every day.
There's probably more stuff I'm forgetting but this should get you started. Networking is fucking annoying as hell, especially for shy friendless losers like us. But they're incredibly important for your success.

>longer than probably 95%

I feel that this detracts from your point. If most of the site is newer than you and apparently you feel more connection to the old essence rather than the new (enough to take pride in it and mention it) then the current incarnation of this site doesn't necessarily represent your "true friends" (only the name remains), and how could they be your "true friends" if you ever expect your reception to be cold? Isn't that too sad? That can't be what friends are, much less "true" friends. Just because you've spent the most time with them it doesn't mean you're stuck with people who treat you like shit, you must realize that's just sunk costs.
If history is even relevant at all, because what I said applies to both old and new 4chan. If you don't mind it, very well. Just something to consider. And I think I'm about as old as that thread.
>>3784947
The original meaning of based is relevant here, it means you're so fucked up on crack that you don't give a shit what people think. So basically be ready for /wvt/ to shit all over you.

I feel like the explanation for your question is so obvious that I'm not sure if you actually don't know it and are trying to gaslight me or not.

Look, it's obvious if you go ANYWHERE that's not here, you cant say even half of what anyone wants to say. How is anyone to know I'm from here or really care and are not just larping? Even Ame had to use plausible deniability to retain her role at holoEN. Just because I'm from here, care about the site, and continue to use it, doesn't mean the average fan here will necessarily give me the amount of time I need to convince them, even if they'd never notice I me in a board.

I feel like you have a completely parasitical attitude towards the site though to be honest. I don't blame you for having it but it's hard to describe it any other way. When newfags come in and start shitting up the place, the only way you get them to stop is by being a present and responsible example of what the site is and represents. It's like children. they're annoying, they're loud, they scream, and they shit things up, but eventually they learn. I did the same, and others did so after me. If your attitude towards passing that torch is
>everyone fucked it up, don't bother just use it and then leave when it stops being useful.
We wont agree on much of anything anyway. This site is my home on the internet, I'm well aware of the disadvantages, the anthithetical mods, the shilling and discord raids, and the blowback from years of overt LGBT propaganda. It's going to keep being my home, even if I have to be the last one out.

(I got affiliate in 2019 pre-vtubing days, this is how I understood it back then.)

3 average viewers. Take all of your streams within a 30 day period and average out how many viewers were on the stream. As in, how high the number gets in your daashboard. You may have 5 unique chatters, but if only 3 watched at a given time, it's still only 3 viewers that stream. I watched this like a hawk when I was going for affiliate and even if I had 5 viewers one day, playing other games to no views tanked that (didn't have any friends that really regularly watched my streams). Pretty much if you get raided once by someone with 20+ viewers, you can get affiliate because it tips the average in your favor. This is how I got affiliate. Now if you're saying "I shouldn't stream unless I get viewers then" the amount of hours streamed unless they changed it was high enough that you need to stream regularly regardless. It's on a rolling basis, so you want to have enough hours on hand on the off chance you get a high number of viewers one stream.

the network broadcasting that probably bought like a lifetime license rights. So the same timeslot was spammed for decades by the same seasons all over again.

Same with Dragon Ball or One Piece. Shows for which they wanted to broadcast daily, while new episodes came weekly in japan. So what to do when the episodes catch up? The mad lad got back to EP1. Every fucking time.

It's actually really customizable looking at it, and it's connected to vtuber commissions just using that style/the character you created. $298 that's pretty fucking good.

I stand corrected, you don't get a ton for $300~. Though there's one for $600~ that gets a lot more stuff. Interesting for a budget thing.

For a chat stream should be fine. Maybe even some retrogaming.
Anything else more heavy on CPU/GPU would start to lose your frames.
