learning to understand japanese and learning to speak japanese are completely different. they are like using different areas of the brain.
to speak well, you have to stop thinking in english and think in japanese. you have to talk in japanese every day.
people like calli and djt etc who use software or content to learn, will be able to comprehend the language as well as they want to, but learning to speak is a very different hill to climb.

Excuse me, what? Maybe you meant to say English because she tends to misuse her idioms and use "should" and "need to" interchangeably when they aren't, according to board consensus. Her German is absolutely fine, doubt her Japanese is any better.
>>3546591
On the first stream after her debut (the one with Kiara talking about RIP), Kiara points out grammar mistakes. Mori then explains that she uses Japan the way other JOP rappers use English: Good sound and rhymes beats grammatical correctness everytime and as long as you can tell what she meant to say, it suffices. But she has shown that she can talk in conversational japanese already, f.e. in RiTunes Labo.

I've done live translation before and that shit takes so much focus it's unbelievable. If you miss what is said for one second it's already over. Instantly knowing the correct translation for everything without having any time to think is one difficulty, but it's also just having to actually memorize what is being said until it's her turn to translate that would be impossible for me.
Plus I don't think I could do that even with my mother-tongue and English (much like Kiara wouldn't be able to).

No, English. During the full drawing collab, some people here complained about Kiara thinking herself to be above others by saying that her mates "need to read superchats" which was taken to mean she considers it absolutely obligatory for everyone to do - basically telling them on-stream that they aren't doing their job right - while she should have said they "should read superchats" so that it would sound like a recommendation and not a command. This was either considered her being impolite enough to bring up her criticism on stream instead of telling them in private, or her being too incompetent at speaking English to talk as much as she does.
I cannot find the specific thread I have in mind, but >we had one about it.

>>is more fluent speaking in Japanese than in German

Kiara is literally a high-school dropout (quit after year ten, then moved to Japan at age sixteen to become an idol. Her parents were apparently fine with this) who learned Japanese in Austria by streaming on Niconico as a fourteen-year old jailbait and manually translating the viewer's chat.

Which resulted in her using futaba colloquialisms when trying to become an idol. Kinda like a Jap trying to learn English by reading 4chan.

The only Japanese she ever learned in Japan was actually polite Japanese.

I wish we had a video of her idol auditions, though. The equivalent of 4chan trying to become a popstar, except entirely unaware they're 4chan and thinking they're speaking completely normal Japanese.

tl;dr: As impressive as Kiara's weeb feats are, I'm not convinced that trying to emulate Kiara is something people should do.

It's completely normal when you're first learning the foundations of a language to translate it into your native language first. Immersion doesn't actually work that well unless you're given references, usually visual via text or image, since if you have no point of reference, immersion is useless. However, language acquisition only begins when you have enough vocabulary and grammatical rules while being familiar enough with the basics to start thinking in the target language, which is where immersion will do you much better than targeted learning.

Because Kiara came to Japan to become a japanese idol and Mori came to Japan to become a rapper (not necessarily a japanese rapper).

Coco's circumstances that caused her to lose proficiency in her native language are a lot different than Kiara's though. Not sure why people think Kiara's German is somehow worse than her Japanese

Although I don't disagree, I hope you know she takes notes while the others are talking (specifically referring to HoloTalk). Still impressive, but taking notes while listening to a person talking is a skill you (are supposed to) acquire during middle/high school. Doing all that under pressure while running a show is commendable, though.

You don't need to speak Japanese to live in Japan; at least as an English speaker. Even paying bills are as simple as walking into a conbini, presenting your utility bill, and having the clerk scan it. The 'hardest' part is anything involving municipal shit, but they'll still bend over backwards for you as an EOP if you have to go into city hall or the post office.

That's not enough of a reason by law.

I can't honestly comprehend it, but it may have something to do with the fact that she was on a Working Holiday Visa and Mori wasn't (she was almost certainly on a Humanities visa, as her "scythe-swinging lessons" sounded like eikawa work rather than Instructor).

Either she couldn't accept a visa from COVER due to convoluted IRL reasons or there's something about her background that makes her ineligible. I have difficulty believing COVER couldn't do it for her, though, as it really doesn't require much capital, resources, or expertise on the part of an employer in Japan to sponsor someone as an employee.
