Cope SEAfag/Chink.
Europe has ALWAYS prefered Japan over the rest of Asia.

'Japan is the only nation in Asia that understands the principles and methods of Western civilization. She has proved that she can assimilate Western civilization, yet not break up her own heritage. All the Asiatic nations are now faced with the urgent necessity of adjusting themselves to the present age. Japan should be their natural leader in that process, and their protector during the transition stage, much as the United States assumed the leadership of the American continent many years ago, and by means of the Monroe Doctrine, preserved the Latin American nations from European interference. The future policy of Japan towards Asiatic countries should be similar to that of the United States towards their neighbors on the American continent'.

It's like how a English speaker can't read Latin, despite using the characters. They are almost completely unrelated languages, learning one doesn't help learn the other.

It's not for some chuuba who will eventually be gone, I mean we're talking about years here, it's because I eventually just want to visit Japan... one day...
I'll either end up in Japan or dead. Perhaps I should go to therapy again

What my dictionary is telling me is that they are meaning depended, sometimes.
And, again (referring to the Chinese philosopher), knowing the meaning is the point of words, so the word itself doesn't matter.

>柄
gara = pattern
e = handle
tsuka = sword handle
kara = shaft

Admittedly, I don't know that much Japanes (although I never claimed I did). I just know that Chinese are struggling because they're depending on their Chinese knowledge, which is detrimental to their learning, but they blame the language itself.

Whatever works for you, yeah. As you've alluded to, wanikani sucks in a sense that it doesn't give you kanji in an order where they might be useful. So a very common kanji, used in plenty of beginner words, may show up at like level 40 or something ridiculous. It's also pretty slow. But besides that it's a legitimate way to learn.

You can always use anki for sentences and vocab.

I said nothing about my secret collaboration with the Japanese imperialists over a long period, an association to which my open capitulation after September 18, 1931 was but the conclusion. Instead, I spoke only of the way the Japanese had put pressure on me and forced me to do their will. I maintained that I had not betrayed my country but had been kidnapped; denied all my collaboration with the Japanese; and even claimed that the letter I had written to Jirō Minami was a fake.
