as i said, the concern for climates is fair. i would say something about the state of /vt/ to have anons that were such petty, spoiled brats that they would refuse to engage in something just because they can't abruptly enter a project that has been active well before they entered and have everything centered around them in the way they want it to be, but then i remember where i am. there is also a consideration for the kinds of anons we want representing other threads, otherwise threads could gain a reputation here that doesn't represent the thread they came from, especially if it's less flattering. if it's more flattering, such as the case with /risu/, then i guess that is fine. og might be a coomskulled smoothbrain, but having a smooth brain is miles ahead of his peers, i've found. also, why aren't we making the new thread before the old one dies? i thought we agreed on a method to prevent that.

I mean, just because most of us can't choose our neighbour in the current system (and in real life, I suppose), and that it will be superseded by future arrivals (debatable - do we want existing writers to reject new writers' suggestion of being neighbours?) doesn't mean it has to stay a privilege, or that we shouldn't still try to maximise it as much as possible.
As for climate, I think the issue then becomes what constitutes "small, self-correcting changes". Does a mountain count? How about a whole county? Entire island? What if the whole country changes its climate but it magically stops at the border? also, what does 'last resort" here means? Does it even mean anything if the writer is dead-set on a specific climate (whether or not we think it is justified)? The thread as a whole rejecting that would probably just mean driving out the writer in question, and if the thread consent to it lest that happens, does it really count as a last resort anymore?

i was just disagreeing with the idea that it could be classified as a liberty. it's a privilege that nobody is entitled to, but that can be granted arbitrarily at the whims of the thread at the time. if two threads want to be neighbors, and if there is an available spot for them to do so, there is no problem. keep in mind that you can also have embassies for nations that are distant but want to have closer relations with each other.
>debatable - do we want existing writers to reject new writers' suggestion of being neighbours?
what's debatable about it? it's a privilege, it was granted to the old first, so granting it to new will necessarily impose restriction and forced changes on the old, but it isn't a liberty of either, and can therefore be revoked for any reason from either. ultimately, the privileges of those who were first granted it should have precedence if either is going to, but there is no importance in precedence for something that can be arbitrarily decided at any point.
as for climates, it's pretty simple what constitutes small changes. climate is a chaotic system where small changes in the climate of one part of the planet can radically alter the climate of another. as long as those changes are mostly centralized, or that the changes don't harm aspects of the lore from another. basically, you want to avoid negative externalities. if the writer is so dead set on a specific climate that that decision alone drives them out, even when it has negative externalities that could push existing writers out just as easily, see >>34031673.

>> No.34034087

>>34033228
Yes, and I disagree with the idea that it *should* be classified as a privilege despite its limited and often mutually exclusive nature. The fact that sooner or later some restrictions will have to be in place because of the finite nature of l*nd on the map doesn't inherently justify it being considered a privilege that should be granted and revoked arbitrarily.
>climate
Is it really that simple, though? How centralised is sufficiently centralised? For example, Mt Mori's Chill Zone is probably the most centralised example, with it creating a supernatural icecap on the mountain and the l*nd around it. I vaguely remember the initial number is a "mere" 500km radius, but that nonetheless causes a noticeably change to half the isl*nd's climate. Now, consider another example, /mep/'s climate is changed to hot-summer Mediterranean and hot desert within its border, with or without a bit of leakage towards /risu/ at the border. Does the change in rainfall pattern and winter temperature have an effect beyond its border? /mep/per says no, and the climate is still similar enough to the original one to justify the effect not being noticeable. A final example on the other end of extreme, namely /nijimale/ and its continental climates. This time, the change is significant enough that unless we have its effect stops magically at the border somehow, it would probably affect its half of the continent (and the peninsula next door, if it's not on said continent).
Can you really draw a line on what is centralised and what is not in these cases? While you can always say the effect stops at the border like Chernobyl cloud at France and still fit the "don't harm aspects of the lore from another" criteria, the resulting patchwork climate isn't something I can say is consistent with good conscience.
I'm not saying that we should force the aforementioned countries to change it back, just that precedents like these only serve to illustrate the point that we don't (and can't) know what environment a future writer would want, and keep patching up the climate to fit the existing map and the writers' wish is not going to result in a consistent system.

>> No.34035177

>>34034087
Personally, I don't think there is so much an issue with magically changing the climate, as with doing so thoughtlessly. Like, if there's a specific natural feature, like Mt. Mori, the Cold Hole from /mans/, or the /mhm/ island, which has a high concentration of magic and the effect it has on the surrounding land is considered carefully and taken to its logical conclusion, I think that is quite fine and interesting. Setups where the magical effect is somehow contained within arbitrary (and realistically, changing) borders seems to interfere more with the setting's climate coherency. That's my opinion, at least. I'd like those climate changes to originate in some kind of "something" that exists in the world.

I'm not saying they aren't interesting - I quite enjoy some of them, actually. That said, the issue isn't as much as whether it is justified by magic (see >>34035237), but rather its arbitrary range. There are extremes on both ends, and we do agree on one being more acceptable than the other, but the difficulty lies in trying to determine where the line should be drawn in the middle - how localised is localised? How far should the effect be felt until it is no longer logical? Does it really matter that much compared with the writers' wish anyway? We joked about then-tropical Anya-Petra being a frozen wasteland months ago, but now I don't think we can really deny a similar proposal without looking arbitrary, considering that we already have examples of something similar, and opening that floodgate doesn't seem like a good idea in terms of maintaining some semblance of the setting's consistency. For me, the mere fact that the province system could potentially resolve that situation by just letting the writer pick the land with the right climate is enough to support it, even if it has its own issues.

when i said it is a privilege, i mean that is what it is. it's not about what should or shouldn't be. that is why i brought up the concept of classification. because it's characteristics make it necessarily a privilege and not a liberty, same as how a bachelor is an unmarried man. you can say you think an unmarried man shouldn't be classified as a bachelor, despite being an unmarried man, but that won't change the fact that that is exactly what they are. a privilege is something that has to be granted because all privileges are, by definition, limited and mutually exclusive. a liberty is, by definition, not limited, and not mutually exclusive. you are always at liberty to do it. that is what separates liberties from privileges. one must be granted, while the other can only be infringed on.
>How centralised is sufficiently centralised?
i think the disagreements we are having might be over the meanings of the words we use. i thought i made it as clear as possible that i only care about negative externalities, and i thought that was the simplest thing to understand in that context, but if you want me to yet again restate my point, then basically all you need to do is figure out which areas ---external to--- the area that is making the change, the areas that are not centralized in the region controlled by the thread that made the proposal in the first place, are going to be affected by that change and how, and then get their consent by asking them whether or not that change would produce negative results for their lore, therefore avoiding --negative externalities.-- things that negatively affect parties that exist external to the instigating interaction.
if you make a change that only affects your own climate, the fact that you were the one to propose it means you automatically consent to it, and with no other affected parties, yours is the only consent that matters. if others are affected as well, you must get their consent, too. once all affected parties, be that one or all nations on the planet, have given their consent, after having been informed of the externalities, they can tell us whether or not those externalities are harmful enough to their lore that it would set them back at all, or if those changes are positive changes that they prefer over what they have already.
if they prefer the kind of changes that will happen, or are indifferent to those changes, then they are not negative externalities. if you changing your climate changes someone else's climate who was here before you and had the privilege to decide their climate before you came into the project, then the one who was already here would get precedence if either of their opinions mattered, which they don't because both of their privileges can be revoked arbitrarily.
this is not to say they should be, but that by being of the classification of a privilege, those privileges can be revoked for any reason the thread decides on. we'll just try to find the most reasonable way to decide on it that will hopefully help us avoid unnecessary conflict, but the fact that the thread can't avoid making a decision, and that that decision could be anything the thread decides on, is how we know that it is a privilege granted by the thread, distributed based on the reasoning of the thread. the thread is required for it to be granted. a liberty would be there until the thread actively infringed on that liberty.
when i said
>small changes, or self-correcting changes that could be caused by more region-locked magical effects
i did, in fact, mean to reference cases such as /morig/, who has a small, self-correcting, region-locked change affecting only their own country's climate that is caused by their magic system. i don't know how this will come out, so i apologize for any problems, or if i end up offending anyone. i was just trying to cover my bases to make sure my point got across, but i'm fairly sure that at least one of them might sound less polite than i intended, and my situation at the moment makes me care a bit less about it due to being preoccupied with other things, believe it or not. just consider the fact that i am tone-deaf and largely socially incompetent in real-world conversations, especially when i am overstimulated or mentally/physically fatigued. hopefully this at least gets the point across, though.

I highly doubt that saying "you can do what you want until we decide otherwise for whatever reason we see fit" is going to comfort people, but moving on...
>climate change
Yes, I'm aware of /morig/'s case and its effect only noticeable in /morig/ itself, but using arguably the most limited example of supernatural climate change as a ballpark is probably not a good idea, considering all the other cases that we've mentioned. Given the fictional nature of this world, we can always say the magical climate change stops at the border somehow, and nowhere outside the country is affected in the slightest. That would fit the criteria mentioned even if it doesn't really make any sense beyond >>34035237. Unless we work out the reasoning of the thread and establish some consistent rules (which I feel will nonetheless end up having a lot of borderline cases and exemptions to be consistent, if the tech timeloops are of any indication), the arbitrary restrictions are going to make the world rather inconsistent one way or other. Granted, the province system is not going to solve the issue entirely, since people can still pick a fitting climate and still want a magical environment, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be minimised by removing the need to completely overhaul one's climate.

it doesn't have to comfort them, but we'll find the most comfortable way of dealing with it because we want it to be comfortable. if at any point that was no longer the case, then we could arbitrarily revoke that privilege for whatever excuse we decided on because privileges are granted, nobody is entitled to a privilege for any reason.
>even if it doesn't really make any sense beyond >>34035237.
comfyanon stopped updating the chuubanite rentry, so i am not sure how long it will take for it to be finished, but i'm pretty sure the one that already exists is detailed enough to hammer in the fact that this system, despite having a fairly hard, well-defined rule system for how it works, is capable of pretty much anything you could want, provided you are ok with the method being out of your control, and the fact that we want to keep abilities balanced from a meta perspective. the fact that /morig/ did it should be evidence enough that there is already a clear method of doing it without contradicting the rules. but again, that is just one example of how it could be done. you don't even necessarily need the magic system to do it, as long as you can make a convincing enough argument for why it won't affect others that stands the tests of our dedicated climate anons.
there are no border cases. either everyone affected by the climate change consents to it being changed, or it is not changed. we spend a lot of time talking about how an anon might join the thread and feel pushed out because they can't have the climate they want, but we spend no time at all thinking about what that very same anon will feel when a new anon comes in and wants to change the climate back. so far, the argument has been that since some anons who aren't even here might potentially be petty enough to feel entitled to a specific kind of climate that we might not be able to grant, we should therefore force existing anons who are here to strive for the impossible by making the climate able to adapt to the unpredictable desires of as of right now imaginary individuals, all for the sake of making sure these non-entities feel comfortable entering the thread, and don't get driven out by not having easy access to a scarce supply of options.
what about when they are given what they want, only to have it changed by the inclusion of a new anon. will you choose to drive out the old, or the new? there will inevitably come a time when you will have to, and when that time comes, you'll see that it would have been far easier, and far fairer to have just been consistent with your expectations from the beginning, but by then it would be too late for any easy, simple solution. you are overcomplicating it, consider reevaluating the situation, do away with considerations for the comfort of hypothetical people who aren't here to defend themselves, and think about the simplest option we have of just letting things be as they are. instead of granting anyone any privilege, inform people of their options and let them decide which of the options they find most agreeable, else give them the opportunity to make proposals that will have the least harmful effect on the people who are here now, not those who might be here later because they are as numerous as they are intangible.
if they choose to leave due to their inability to make do with what they have, or to find a way to change things without harming the rest of the thread, do not try to force them to stay. you don't need to interfere in these regards. if anything, you should want to drive the more toxic, entitled, or lazy individuals out, not that all cases will be as simple as that, but just because the individual case is relatively complex doesn't mean the solution won't be. the solution is always the same, and that consistency is what will make it fair. only when people choose to add exceptions will there be room for the arbitrary, nonsensical, and genuinely harmful results that we are trying to avoid by having these discussions. that's my perspective, anyways.

>the solution is to have anons work it out one way or the other
>To me, it is you that is overcomplicating things.
even in my attempt to clarify things, i am misunderstood. you say forcing a standard solution is nonsense while advocating for a standard solution, the very same solution i was advocating for, as though it were to contradict my suggestion. the lack of a solution is a solution where the standard of allowing things to settle themselves is preferred. in this context, what that would look like would be that when someone makes a proposal that has no effect on others, nobody will try to prevent them from doing it because nobody is affected enough to care. alternatively, when someone makes a proposal that does have an effect on others, it will be considered a matter to be decided between the affected parties where the one causing the disruption will have the burden of convincing the others that the change will not negatively affect them, else they will try to find a less disruptive proposal.
the alternative proposal which i was fighting against was the idea that we should strive to make things more comfortable for newcomers by artificially privileging them with the ability to decide their climate, even if it would disrupt the climates of others who were already here, to avoid "driving out" the potential newcomers in this hypothetical scenario. i am explaining to the other individuals why it is nonsensical to worry about such hypothetical scenarios, and how there is a far more simplistic solution that doesn't require the use of privileges which are, by their very nature, and regardless of how they appear, arbitrary. the fact that privileges are granted means they must have a granter, and that by their sole authority as a granter, they have the right to do with it as they please. thus the decisions they make over who gets a privilege is arbitrary, regardless of how much you agree personally with the excuse for that decision, the fact that that excuse is unnecessary means it could have been any other excuse and would have been just as legitimate in all but public viewing, which itself is just as arbitrary. you and i seem to be on the same boat in this regard, if i am understanding your reply correctly.

Personally I'm fine with that, which I suppose is a way to ensure that most climate changes are very localised. Probably won't be a good news for those who want to change the whole country's climate, though.
>what about when they are given what they want, only to have it changed by the inclusion of a new anon
Well, the old Anya-Petra anon was fine with the tropical environment while the current one wasn't, so we know our existing solution would be to let them change place with others. The same would still be applicable with the province system - if anything, the addition of blank space would make the process easier since it won't necessarily affect others.

if there was another available (as in unoccupied) place that they prefer that is already the way they want their environment to be, then there was never any dispute in the first place. all i'm saying is that they shouldn't be able to change the climate of the place they exist in if it effects the climate of other anons who did not consent to those changes. i wasn't disagreeing at all with the idea that they can pick whatever available space they want to be in.

in other words, i am not advocating that we grant blatantly arbitrary privileges, i am pointing out the fact that privileges are all based on the arbitrary decisions of the granter, regardless of what excuse they use to justify granting that privilege, which is just a fact of how privileges work. pointing out someone is a bachelor says nothing about why they are a bachelor, or whether or not they should be, or even whether or not we should lie to ourselves and say that they aren't actually a bachelor, despite the fact that they are an unmarried man, just because we think it shouldn't be the case. you'll never change the fact that that is what it is, and it makes you look like an incel if you insist on lying about having a girlfriend or girl(male)friend to marry, but you can do that. at this point, this discussion seems to be losing my interest in it. if you still don't get it, so be it. i don't think we disagree on anything substantive at this point, just that you are misunderstanding some of my points. thanks for the discussion, it was entertaining. i'll figure out if there is anything more to gain from this conversation with your response but i'll probably end it here otherwise.

>>34056818
It depends on how widespread the mountains are (since subtropical highlands are mentioned, I'm going to assume they go at least 1.5km above sea level), since that also determines how large the rain shadow will be. The gist is that area "benefitting" from the orthographic lift will receive more rain during summer, meaning that it will likely be pushed into tropical monsoon climate instead of the tropical savanna that currently dominated the southern coast of the continent. It's basically the same process that creates those crazy rainfall pattern maps you might have seen, but in somewhat more manageable manner since the /774/ highland is probably not the Himalayas.
North of the mountains, though, the rainshadow effect will result in the area being drier even during the summer wet season (since all its waters ended up south of the mountains). This is especially problematic for the area between the /774/ mountains and the /voms/-/tsun/ highland (namely the /pcg/-/vst+/ border), since the aforementioned highland also blocks any water it might have received from the north during winter. Depending on the scale of the /774/ mountains, that area might end up becoming tropical wet-and-dry climate, if not hot semi-arid (/774/ is probably not long enough to create a big enough rain shadow to make a full-on desert). Basically, if we assume the entirety of /774/ becomes a highland, the border region will likely become more like a savannah than the rainforest it currently is. Around the area immediately north~northwest of the mountains, you might even get semi-arid scrubland.
As for the climate of the elevated /774/, see picrel for a general breakdown. The line is somewhat blurry, but I would say the following numbers are fairly decent ballpark:
>Tropical lowland to montane forest: starting around 800m. The ground-level will likely be rather foggy, which also facilitates a robest understorey filled with climbing plants, ferns, moss, and other plants that need that high a humidity to survive.
>Montane forest to moorland: also known as the tree line, which should be around 3000~4000m. Trees will become increasingly patchy as altitude rises and temperature drops.
>Moorland to icecap: about 1km above tree line, so 4000~5000m. As the name suggests, here the temperature drops to the point it never rises above freezing, so glaciers will form.
If you want to know more about how the place might look like (assuming it's that tall), Kilimanjaro is a good place to start.

Well, tropical savannah (which in terms of biome will occupy ~half of tropical savannah climate and ~half of hot semi-arid) is pretty decent if you like safari and doesn't mind eating millet and cassava, and the large river there should still be able to support irrigation along the riverbank, kind of like a discount Nile. Scrubland (which will occupy the remaining half of hot semi-arid) also has some unusual plants that might be of economic value.

>>34058455
A valley in between will allow some degree of moisture to pass through, although I don't know if that kind of terrain is plausible with natural processes. If the pass still has a decent elevation above the other end, you might ned up getting some pretty significant Foehn wind, which is fun to learn, but very much not fun to live in.

Not much to say about it, since it mainly talks about the outside of /774/, dunno if placing them as a waiting power will work out.
Do remember that anything you write for /774/ may or may not be scrapped if we do recieve an eventual /774/ lore writer, so I'd be more careful in how you want to integrate them into the overall geopolitics of the area, don't just shove them in as a player.

uhm ok, i am not sure how to properly convey what i am thinking of.

let me try it from a different angle.

think of it like english, except there is no origin nation for it in the form of englan (or maybe there is, would depend on a future /wvt/ rep), whose purpose is to help communicate across the continent between nations.

on the southern half however that language probably got influenced a lot by "Githantheioi" since the /774/ empire is the root for a lot there even today.

so it would be a bit like US-English VS AUS-English etc. still one language that people can understand between each other but also heavily influenced by the core of its 2 regions. that beign the more EN focused north and JP focused south.

>> No.34071828

>>34071732
Is the south actually JP focused? Phase has like 3 (4 if tenma is counted), vshojo just got 2, and then there is 774 and voms. So you are talking about dialects of the same language unless I am mistaken?

>> No.34071995

the main issue was 2 isntances, one being /inf/ that wanted all kinds of stuff, while proclaiming it fine because they are isolationist only to end that the moment they got msot of the stuff they wanted and basicly did heavy powergaming and the other was alice that wanted advanced navy stuff to compete with that basicly to make her natiosn stronger back when he had a lot of misunderstandings about things that also where misunderstood by the thread.

lots of nations have advanced tech:
the retro reich got onobots
/nenmens/ got cybernetic body parts with their comfydants
/who/ got advanced communications i beleive? (not sure about that one)
/nasa/ used to have a whole spaceship with advanced tools like chainsaws.

heck, Panon and I even mananged to get a dreaded canal to work if i may say so proudly

it really comes down to what your goal and vision is. if you truly want things that are there to enrich and enhance the feel of your nation than i am sure the thread as a whole also learned and advanced and is able to come up with ways to make it a reality.

use pricu, and modifiers (adjective and adverbs) go after. kracu is a sort of confusion exclamation, so it probably sounds like a doujin title when you say that

you can have glyphs in glyphs, and artificial glyphs if you have the resources, technical capabilities, and the knowledge of how to do it. /meat/ chuubanite in particular is very capable of the thing you said you wanted, but technology limits us a bit at the moment.

>> No.34087660

>>34067276
In terms of glyphs on human, such as the chuubanite tattoo of /meat/,
>What are the limitations of glyphs?
In this case, the main limitations would be:
1) It runs on chuubanite power, so how much effect it can be done is limited by how much chuubanite can be utilised; and,
2) It's attached to human body, so it is probably limited by how much the body can take. /meat/ is very experienced in testing the human limit, so it's safe to say that this is somewhat less an issue.
>How complex can a glyph reasonably be
I would say it's limited by the glyph's resolution, so the limiting factor will likely be how good the glyph drawer/tattoo artist is (after a certain point, the body's natural function and growth will limit the resolution of glyph tattoo, but you'll probably need machine precision for that to matter). I suppose poor diet can also interfere with that due to the body getting out of shape.

Glyph usage on catalognauts interest me in particular since they'd act as a rechargeable battery for their own glyph effects, I think the specifics of certain ideas I had wouldn't quite work (using a layer of ligaments underneath the skin to act as a lightweight defense ala Shadowrun Trolls) but I'm curious as to whether certain other bodily modifications could be done like giving someone a second heart or increasing the amount of adrenaline that gets released through the brain during stressful situations.

>> No.34089381

>>34088635
I think getting a layer of ligament underneath the skin might be easier than getting a second heart (unless you mean transplanting a second heart and then using glyph effects to make it work). Since there are already existing connective tissues in different layers of the skin, using glyph effects to modify specific physiological processes to convert the layers into something more durable should not be too unfeasible. It might even have the unintended side effect of improving your skin condition depending on the process!

/meat can do prosthetics, and can make chimeras since we can theoretically use our chuubanite to control evolution through artificially speeding natural selection and mutation, while also creating artificial selection processes for selective breeding to advantage certain kinds of results. why you would want two hearts is a bit of a mystery to be. as for the adrenaline, you can already heal the neural pathways, and encourage the production of neurotransmitters just from /meat/ regeneration effects alone. making them stronger and more sensitive would also be possible, because /meat/ regeneration works through the life cycle. you would have to decrease the equilibrium point of the neurons to help them achieve their action potentials with less resources to avoid the diminishing returns caused by desensitization, but /meat/ chuubanite would help in that process.

>> No.34090882

>>34090015
idk why all the typos, and i think i messed up a few words, prosthetics vs transplants (though they are kind of the same if you think about it), but whatever. needless to say, you can also just look at how certain sensitizing drugs work for inspiration. by sensitizing i mean drugs that increase the effect of certain things. it has more in common with how someone who never had coffee or alcohol before can feel the effects of it far stronger than if they use it regularly. also, the increased metastasizing caused by intermittent fasting can cause your body to have stronger effects from eating when you start eating again.

I don’t know if /vnug/ would have a lot of siege equipment since I don’t know if they have things to siege down (and it’s established that their main pre-Mujigae enemies are the local fauna). Shit, if you want to hit the unicorn theme from multiple angles, there's no reason there couldn't also be something even closer to unicorns hanging out in the tundras (woolly rhinoceroses). I think the most recent specimens might have lived just a couple dozen thousand years ago IRL, so it's plausible for them to exist in Vitubia.
