The sun isn't going to run out of fuel in 5 billion years, that's the number for when it will become a red giant and swallow up the nearest planets, us included. It will only run out in 8 billion years from now. That being said, the sun would probably kill in 2 billion years, not 5, just from the heat alone, but there's a chance that's not the case and it would only make it harder to live, not impossible.

The thing is, that guy and you are speaking of 500 million years as if it is an inconsequential amount of time, but keep in mind that life didn't start 5 billion years ago, it started much later, 2.5 billion years ago, and for about 1 billion years after it started, nothing really happened, it's know as the boring billion. In reality, only like 1-1.5 billion years of evolution is what we had. So that extra 500 million years you're speaking of would make up 1/3 of all the time we've had to go from single cells to homo sapiens sapiens. If we go off of what he really meant in time frames though, which I'm assuming is 1.5 billion years too late, we would still be able to evolve. Earth would have several more inhospitable areas, but humans could've still thrived as we do today. But anyway, the main answer to his worries is that exponential growth is why we went from banging on rocks to landing on the farthest planets of our solar system and beyond in just 12k years after having existed for 1.5 billion years. People really always underestimate exponential growth, and that's a huge oversight.

Oh hey I just caught up with the series yesterday so this is a neat surprise. This was an enjoyable chapter. It was slow but I enjoy the pace you've set, it's nice to see Anon's and Botan's relationship bud over time. Also the little tussle with Marine was pretty funny and I'm interested in what Laplus's role is in all this. The only nitpick I have is when anon was reminiscing about his ex-gf. Aside from the relationship building and the tidbits of lore it really was.
Reason is that I believe there has to be filler before the big moments. I've shot myself in the leg before by making too much stuff happen too quickly, and other anons had told me so.
I take the flashback segment's comments at heart as well. I've realized that only I understood because I wrote the fic, rather than because I managed to lay it out well enough.

The zombie lifts her skirt and drops down on your face, her innards prolapsing out her sphincter, covered in shit, maggots, flies, and rot. She flips your chair upright and grabs your leg, pinching at your ankle until her fingers sink in behind your Achilles tendon. With a sharp motion she rips it out of your leg.
