That's something that I've seen happening quite frequently within utaite and vtuber circles. Mostly because, considering the origin of the term, they're not making a cover in a more western sense but trying to sing the song, so they end up doing their hardest to make it sound as close to the original, and that's especially grating when the original had heavy use of stuff like autotune and the covers end up copying it. Vocaloid songs end up having a little bit more leeway but they still try to match the original and rarely do remixes of the instrumental part.
