YouTube is over-reliant on the algorithm and makes something as simple as manually finding streams very cumbersome. I don't really understand why they are so stubborn on improving this. The presence of a basic catalog will not suddenly turn into a Twitch situation where only the top streamers get promoted and everyone viewbots for exposure. The algorithm will always be the primary way people find content on YouTube because people are too lazy to manually look through a catalog when they can just look at their front page and get blasted by content similar to what they watch. A catalog will just make it easier for power users to find things directly and provide more information for the recommendation algorithm to work with, so why not?
By comparison, Twitch's discoverability is total dogshit. The recommendations are a fucking joke and are based on shit like CCV and chat speed, then it may take the category the streamer is using into account after these two. The top streamers are always getting injected into the recommendation list and they are all sharing one gigantic mass of viewers that they're spitting into each others' mouths. Tags were a great idea that turned to shit the moment they stopped enforcing them properly. See how the vtuber tag basically got hijacked by non-vtubers. You don't get discovered purely on Twitch unless you are at least top 95% in viewership. It HAS to be done off-platform or by viewbotting to get onto the front page of the catalog.
Every method of growth on Twitch is skewed towards and relies on the top streamers. As a result, it is absurdly difficult to find anything below the first 3 or 4 pages of the catalog, because Twitch only allows you to sort by recommendation, High to Low, and Low to High. You either get to see the best of the best or the lowest of the low and everyone in between gets crushed. Despite how much people deride it, YouTube's recommendation system is more sophisticated than most and allows you a lot of power to fine tune and filter specific niches. Unlike Twitch, YouTube will regularly expose you to these mid-level 2views and 3views as long as they align with the categories you watch and like the most, which is crucial for growth ON the platform itself. That is the core of the issue, you CAN'T grow on Twitch's platform alone and if you're not in the top 99% you might as well not even exist.
