I can't help much with the hug part, but don't worry about not having a significant other. I've been single for nearing on a decade, and I'm happier now than I was then. Relying on another person to make you happy will only put unneeded stress on that other person, and cause a breakup to be that much worse on you.

Anything you do to improve yourself in positive ways is worthy of praise. The actual quality of the outcome doesn't matter so much as long as you're putting in three honest work to better yourself (and to a lesser degree, the life of those around you).
