It’s not just the teaching experience… it was also just that for awhile our games were close. I mostly won, but we were close in skill for awhile and it made it fun. It's the nature of the medium to make real criticism difficult. By default the people watching you like you enough to spend their time doing so over all the alternatives and won't have much criticism. And even if they do have some they don't want to jeopardize how you see them by revealing them.
As a viewer its hard to know what criticism will be taken well and what will be seen as a personal attack.

Generally friends give the best feedback, though some vtubers use other vtubers for feedback which can sometimes end up being worse than none at all.

I'm also in the same boat as you. Currently contemplating whether or not I should quit by the end of the year. It's difficult to experiment with your content only for it to fail in attracting new viewers. It's hard to want to do anything if you don't already have the numbers to justify it. I want to invest in my stream and get new scenes and transitions but I'm afraid nobody would care about them. Changing my game choices or even getting a new model wouldn't help increase my numbers all that much I reckon. The only solace I have are from the few kind words I see posted occasionally and the kind people I've gotten to know since streaming. Vtubing won't have been a total bust but I won't deny that it hasn't been extremely demotivating at times.

But for example if I post a drawing and its absolute dogshit, but it gets the same likes as something I'm proud of, it just makes me think that the things I'm proud of are at the same level of shit I'm ashamed of. I had a short discussion with someone in the thread a couple of weeks ago about the nature of streaming. I keep returning to our little exchange and want to get some obsessive thoughts out of my head so I can go to sleep.

I don't hold much faith in livestreaming as a worthwhile medium for artistic expression. Escapist entertainment? Sure. Indirect socialization and community-building? Sure, though not as much. But I cannot see much value in using streams for ambitious creative projects.

I do think that talent and time invested in making "creative" streams would produce more interesting art if it was diverted to prerecorded video. But that's not what people want, is it? Viewers with obsessive tendencies and impulsive spending problems are drawn to streams, where the payoff of a lewd point redeem or a 10-sub donation is instantaneous. Perhaps it's for the best to filter out those people as hard as one can, since few of us have any chance of making it financially

I disagree, I think there are certain ways that a livestream can provide a creative outlet that prerecorded content can't. I say this as someone who's main online content has been prerecorded/edited content for years and years, though I'm coming at this from the angle of actual "projects" rather than "playing Elden Ring for 12 hours" kinda content.
The problem is that a lot of people don't leverage the advantages that livestreaming gives you, namely:
