There's also X-Potato (VS Runetracer) that turns into Rap Dog with Idol Song and super passive items, Kiara's stream showed super idol costume (45% special cooldown and gives you 2 uses) and super SC time (100% coins and heal on coin pickup). We don't know Stage 2's 10 minute or 20 minute bosses yet, or any unlocks related to stage 2 in general.

I would have liked to see some items rebalanced in terms of cost (in levels) but uber sheep is twice as good as it was so at least it's not as pathetic as it was before. Gorilla is -20% crit instead of -50% crit which makes it a really easy pick on any character without crit mechanics, and at least potentially viable on characters with crit mechanics, instead of entirely unusable on any character with crit procs. Sake didn't need a buff.

Gold farming will be different. Piggy bank is a solid +1800-2400 gold in stage mode depending on how early you get super chatto, plus Halu for coins for kills. I don't think Kiara ever picked halu but even if halu is 5 levels it's probably worth it. It might get to the point where glasses are no longer optimal over going for more kills.

The bug where skipping the box animation earns you fewer coins will also be fixed. But the growth upgrade (2% primary weapon and special damage per in-game level) seems like it'll be really overpowered for some characters.

Fubuki: Dodge/Speed focused character whose attack scales with bonus speed. Awakening makes her tail swipe hit in a 270º radius, and can proc swords from her special.
Mio: Close-range sustain type who can spam her special. Costume and Piiman are core on her. Awakening grants her cards a chance to debuff, making her safer up close.
Okayu: Basically crit Fauna. Critting a target makes them vulnerable to instant kills by walking into them. Awakened weapon throws 6 projectiles that slow enemies.
Korone: Tanky with haste. Haste buff is very easy to upkeep but her special can refill them if you fuck up, tankiness comes from max HP and damage reduction. Awakening makes her weapon never stop firing.
Suisei: CRITS. Additional procs on crits and axe weapons (her basic, regular axe and the axe collabs) grant sustain. Awakened weapon has 100% crit rate and 3x crit damage.
Miko: Defensive with debuffs and heals. Awakened weapon and special have additional damage support for other weapons. Synergy with Elite items (Bucket and Cooking for sure, MiComet unconfirmed, there may be new Elite weapons we haven't seen yet).
Roboco: Attack/Crit focused and scales with levels, enemies drop additional XP. Incredible special that grants huge bonuses to attack, haste and crit. Awakened weapon fires a massive energy blast forward. Seems one of the strongest characters in the batch.
Azki: All-rounder. Has a better version of Sana's pulse which seems to be her core ability, a defensive version of Kiara's Dancer with a sprinkle of Kronii's haste for not getting hit. Awakened weapon procs small notes parallel to the main one.
Sora: Boss killer. Marks targets making her pet take their aggro and doing extra damage to them. Awakened weapon shotguns a lingering projectile that explodes when it fades.

I would like to see an unannounced feature whereby once all chuubas have been unlocked the image of A-chan becomes clickable. Kiara also has no idea what she's doing with upgrades and doesn't really buy them, though to be fair it's not really obvious to a complete beginner that upgrades are way more important than character unlocks. That being said Kiara is probably the skill level being targeted by the first stage: you can get through it with brute force and not much skill so long as you pick up the very basic idea of killing enemies instead of running away the whole time.

New gold farm build will be glasses, super chat, halu, piggy bank, though that's assuming Kiara didn't miss anything huge for farming. For the last two slots milk will probably be ranked higher than before since it also helps fix the nerfed pickup range. Assuming you can get ahead of them with enough upgrades then the new map is also +20%. I assume Mumei will still be the lazy gold farming pick even with her bugs being fixed; her weapon still gives the best coverage and friend still picks up the most experience.

She didn't play older characters but we at least know Kiara has been reworked a bit. There were changes to items though, nerfs and buffs. Biggest change for tryhards is that super chat time was dropped to 10% per level but some other new items should make gold farming better anyway.

For other items: Uber sheep is twice as good as before, nurse horns are flat healing instead of a percentage. Horns are still the best item for sustain/casuals but no longer scale infinitely for endless mode, and shit players should still grab body pillow which got buffed to decrease damage taken too. Gorilla paws is now only -20% crit so it's a much better item for characters without crit. Still a bad choice for most characters but it's no longer a run killer if you accidentally pick it with half the cast. Mask got a buff but I forget the exact numbers, Sake got a buff too based on eating.

Kiara didn't have everything unlocked though but I have to assume energy drink has been changed since it was the worst item. The changes mostly seem to be there to make the game easier for low skill players - buffing the crutches like pillow to get players through stage mode - and a few nerfs/reworks where some items were clearly just too strong.

Mumei's special is the worst, and looks like it'll still be the worst in 0.4, but it kills everything off-screen without erasing stuff (though it's possible that's a bug that'll be fixed in 0.4) so there are some specific times in each run when you can use it to get more guaranteed kills. It's not that great, but it has some uses.

The real reason Mumei's special is the worst is because it has a slow startup time and then blocks your vision. As a panic button style special killing everything is good, but if you're actually panicking it'll get you killed.

I don't really agree, but it's hard to pull apart the weapon from the passives. If Fauna had Mumei's insane (and bugged) scaling passives then her weapon would be just as good. Personal weapons also seem like they're going to be more relevant with the Growth unlock, which I'm not sure I like as a mechanic but will definitely give fauna's weapon more of a kick to keep it relevant.

The game isn't hard, you shouldn't be challenged too much even if you do something stupid like picking gorilla first with Bae, but if I accidentally picked it and disabled most of the mechanics of my character. -50% crit was enough that most characters would not make it back to positive crit chances outside of endless, and in endless you'd much rather take +attack than +crit to get yourself out of crit debt. Without crit most characters lose either a major component of their passives or some of their mechanics.

Calli's scythe was particularly bad for new players or those that didn't get the memo that most personal weapons were bad. The game is meant to be easy enough for vtubers to play it and especially early on, with no gacha ranks or shop upgrades to fix her movement. You start out only a bit faster than the enemies so if one of them gets inside the minimum range it takes a lot of running to manage to kill them with only one weapon. The typical beginner will also start by upgrading her scythe instead of picking new weapons which - in the objectively worst design decision - also makes the dead zone larger.

Good/experienced players worked around it by ignoring her scythe completely, which was its own problem.

This is somewhat tangential, but i really dislike this tendency amongst people who got into games after the year 2004 to call all interesting interactions in a game 'bugs'.

One of the worst feelings there is in a gameplay experience is feeling like the game and or developer is trying to 'fight you' in your endeavor to master it. By this we don't mean in a direct sense like it presenting you with challenges you need to figure out, but in a more meta sense, where there is nothing *too* figure out; where every interesting possibility seems to be preemptively closed off, or, where you think you have figured something out, and suddenly it is snatched out of your hands after the fact.

Contrapositively, one of the best feelings in the world when it comes to playing a game is that feeling of figuring out some clever tech and doing something cool with it, taking your play to a higher level. Did you know that in the original Street Fighter II, combo attacks were not a planned feature by the developers? It was a quirk of mechanics discovered by arcade players after release. Something so basically foundational to the popular concept of fighting games, and it arose by complete accident, being consciously elaborated on as a feature in later installments. That is felicity right there.

In later days, what one so often sees is that the moment someone figures out some advantageous tech, a dev team comes in to 'patch' it (because all games are 'always online' nowadays, too). As almost like a knee-jerk, autonomous reflex even, without any conscious thought as to what ultimate purpose is being served thereby, which is often unclear. The ethic that is *implied* by the behavior seems to be either, that nothing not preconcepted by the devteam is allowed, or, that nothing that can give a player an advantage in playing the game is allowed, or some combination thereof. I can hardly think of a term to describe this bent, it is like some kind of spiritual sickness, or unconscious socio-politcal tendency. Like a demented gardener who takes a weedwhacker to any plants that grow up above a certain line; nothing outstanding allowed.

Over time, this process leaves one with a property that feels lifeless, empty, and sterile; learned helplessness, with no special effort to figure out tech because any time you do it'll all get changed anyways; a bubble-wrapped meandering through beige mediocrity; where no particular actions are particular impactful, and you are closer to a stage-actor moving along the carefully choreographed lines of a set-piece, than a player making the world of the game yours.

There may be good reasons for not liking it even. What im trying to push back on here is the uncritical blindspot over the notion that there could even be a debate over such a thing in the first place. To push back against the notion that either, 1. anything unplanned is automatically bad, or more importantly, 2. that anything being more advantageous than other things is automatically bad.

The one argument you always see every time a subject like this comes up anywhere is something like, 'one choice being especially stronger than others makes a game trivial by rendering all other possibilities superfluous', which, on a theoretical level, can certainly be true. This is not an argument against that notion. It is a notation of that fact that, so many think of nothing *except* this notion; their minds are closed off to the idea that there exists anything else in possibility space *beyond* this concern. That a situation where *all* choices are trivial and functionally interchangeable in utility is not only possible, but is in fact the *most* common failure state of popular games in practice, far more than the former case.

There are sociological reasons for this tendency of course; when true equality is achieved by leveling everything to the ground, it may suck, but it also means that there is nothing for anyone to feel *spiteful* over against anyone else, either. The human animal is all too willing to accept things sucking if everything sucks for everyone else, too. Any time a shitter has a bad time while other people are having a good time - or indeed, even the *perception* of other people having a different (and therefore better) time - they will become extremely voiciferous over it - irrespective of whether it is justified or not. And since most developers are humans, they are sensitive to these dynamics too. The squeaky wheels get the oil, and the cycle proceeds thusly in one instance to another over time. The optimization process working towards optimizing for social stability, rather than optimizing for depth of gameplay. Many such cases.
