Because the issue is that nothing stops an API sell call from passing through even if you don't have enough shares in a fund. It's not really a bug that requires malicious intent to happen. Both times it happened to me it was an accident and I've reimbursed the people affected, pretty sure my carelessness cost me for the most part in those cases. For priestess, he dumped 6000+ shares of the fund over the week because the manager of the fund asked him to, so I assume he just didn't check what the bot was set to do.

It's "fixed" quite easily through either watching your sells or making an IF statement that'd check it on client's side, but none of those are foolproof. For me, a hasty setting of the fund trades is what lead to the Lamy incident, on which I was the only one who has really lost money in the end. My point is, anything I do on my end is just a band-aid fix to an issue with NASFAQ's API. I assume Trial Dev's statement is also basically a warning not to knowingly abuse it, as in, trying to knowingly sell down to negative shares.

I've cooperated with Trial Dev regarding the first time it happened, and reimbursed the CEO of that fund via auction, talking to them in the messages. The thing here is that the other person's argument here is a thinly veiled "I can't use external tools so no one should" hidden under the guise of outrage for a bug. So far I've been asking people who accidentally encountered this to buy it back. I don't have the ability to directly manipulate fund values and that would require honk. I can give people refunds in liquid directly to their own wallet. As far as I am aware because of fees people who get the buyback are usually up more money anyway (or were made whole some other way) so I haven't had any unresolved complaints come to me personally yet. In the case of triangle he ended up initially losing ~500m when a fund dissolved with his negative shares.

hello, I didn't even know you could sell shares into the negatives, usually if you try to make an invalid call the server just refuses with an error. I was selling back my shares and didn't realize I was already at zero. trial dev contacted me after and we've been sorting it out.
Also you can't "stop people from using the api", the api is what you're using when you're using the site, it's not any sort of special back channel. It's an easy bug to fix for them, they're already doing checks on every other calls, they probably just forgot to do it here. I don't know why it's taken them so long if it was already known...
