Question for other drawfags: do you feel like sketches don't actually help you improve after a certain point? I notice when I try to go to lineart or clean up I am spending a long time refining the lines I thought I liked in the rough/sketch, which probably means they weren't really that good to being with.

Sketching does help because of muscle memory. Liking the sketch more than line art or colors is a very common artist thing, you're not alone. If something looks better as a sketch just leave it. Or make a copy of it to leave as is and have a lined/refined version.

I wouldn't say it doesn't help you improve, but sketchy chickenscratch lines can make a lot of things look good when they're really not because your mind fills in the blanks. Different artists have different ways of working around this. Some do very refined sketches so there's very little messing around to do when moving on to lineart, some do very rough sketches and work out everything at the lineart stage. It's up to you.
Also what >>31986062 said. If you're not satisfied with the more refined version leaving it as a sketch is fine.
