It's a mix. I only ever do planning if I enjoy doing it (i.e fantasising about various scenarios and adventures), though I sometimes jump straight into a story blind when I feel like it. Both ways of writing have their advantages.

Halfway through the next chapter of Brown Black and Blue. It's almost to it's conclusion. I'd give it two chapters before the main event.

I'm going to try to make a more surrealist work if I can manage it. I've had this idea in my head for a long time that's almost like a dream sequence but I haven't been able to execute properly. I'm still working out the kinks.

I'm also starting to get some ideas for a new story like Building Block Doll. Need to turn it over in my mind a bit more before I start it though.

Inspiration just slaps me across the face and I run with it. Building Block Doll was a spur of the moment chapter and I only began planning it properly around 10 chapters through.

Normally I don't develop a proper outline until 2-3 chapters down. I need to have a little time to test the ideas I have and get some good character work started. I often plan my stories in terms of character arcs rather than event 1 leads to event 2.

Unless you're writing short stories told in first person, and in an (almost) stream of consciousness manner; present tense can work there.
