Chat being on screen is awful. It's a transparent ploy to get people to engage by dangling 15 seconds of being seen on stream in front of them. This creates an incentive for them to socially posture as a "good fan" while disincentivizing actual discussion because anything you say that sets people off will be immortalized in a vod for all to see. Then chubas wonder why their chats are groveling hugboxes when shallow positivity is the only thing they incentivize.

I've watched streams for a year now and I have never looked at chat, neither on the webpage or the stream, so ksy for obsessing over other people besides your oshi.

I only hate ESLs if I disagree with what they're saying. It's a very easy way to attack them. Similar to how those who can speak Japanese will call us EOPs when they are upset, but not in other circumstances.

There were a lot of Japanese viewers who watched their streams on TV/fullscreen, so they added it there to make it easier for them to see other people's reactions. (Nihon loves their live commentaries and facial reactions i.e. NND)

Weird, I remember early Twitch streamers doing that, and doubt most of them had even heard of NicoNico. Then again, the livestream side of NND predates most modern western streaming services, so there might be some truth to that. Many "customs" that JP chuuba still adhere to obviously originated on Nico, and non-JPs often copy those unaware of the original context.
