Hello /asp/ies, I want to give a shot at streaming but I need some advice because I can't decide if I should rather go the vtuber route or not.
Having an avatar implies you need to be even more invested and cautious about your identity, but I feel like getting into this community, might suit me more than being a regular streamer.
On the other hand, being just me with no avatar would probably help being more relaxed while streaming, also I could play with friends without it being too problematic, but that would cut me off of the vtuber circles I suppose.

Well, if your established friend circle doesn't do vtubing stuff, and you want to stream because you like hanging out with them then there's probably no point. In general I don't really see a reason to stream at all here. I think in general vtubing is more of a personal thing, you create a character and people get invested in your character (and you). Your friends would kind of be a downgrade in the first place to the stream experience.

But in the end there's just one thing you have to ask yourself: Do you want to make up a character and become a cute anime person? If yes, then I see no reason why you shouldn't do it, especially because you don't seem to want anything out of it. You don't need a reason to indulge in a hobby.

Sure. No real reason not to be a vtuber if you think it will add a bit of fun to your streams. It can open up new doors, but it will close doors as well. Ultimately I would say go vtuber if you like Japan/anime subcultures and want to cultivate a viewerbase that likes it too, and don't if you want a more standard streamer fanbases.

I think that the best way to go about it is to design a character with a brief, easily explainable backstory and a design that’s in line with your personality and the things you stream about instead of roleplaying as a fictional character. I know I don’t watch vtubers to listen to them read me a novella about their avatar.
The avatar is just window dressing that provides the performer anonymity, and the puppetry at work is interesting to look at. I don’t really expect a vtuber to be in character at all times, especially not during a stream.

I can't really speak for the "professional" male chuubas, but from observing most male content creators, being incredibly autistic and good at one thing while trying to expand your visibility in that one thing will help get eyes on you. People especially enjoy males if they're passionate about what they're doing content on, giving high retention. The only worry is that you see the males pigeonhole themselves into their one category of content if they ever feel like branching out.

No. It's only gotten worse over time. The amount of vtubers of every kind has just gotten bigger and bigger much faster than the number of vtubers, and males at least at the lower level vastly outnumber females already so there is a lot more competition over the scraps. As you look at higher ccv vtubers it might be slightly better but I wouldn't know. The way to compensate really is just marketing yourself and being better than the competition. Or just find a niche that isn't adaquately filled.

It's a sliding scale. For a huge name streamer (Ironmouse, Gura, w/e) it is undeniably parasocial, while the smaller the streamer is the more the lines between parasocial and social get blurry. Some people have made it pretty far with premade models.
If you like the design and think it suits you and don't mind shelling out for a 1/1 model I think they can be worth it.
I've seen a girl go from 0 to partner on twitch in less than 6 months using a premade 1/1 limited model from nizima.
Obviously she's an outlier but anecdotally you can be successful regardless of if your model was a premade design or not.
With a good design, good work ethic, and a stupid amount of luck anything is possible.

Gamers can be very unoriginal as they define themselves by the products they consume and the brands they support and brand tokens called achievements they collect. It doesn't matter if their character is a demon lord or a heart surgeon. Many don't have any experience and lack a lot of creativity which is why calling streamers content creators is so ironic. The content they create is recording themselves consuming content. It's low tier low effort content that people put on in the background while they work. There are some exceptions but you can't expect most streamers to suddenly become creative people because they ordered a character model. You're probably not wrong about Chase though, I know some people think he sounds androgynous but I personally don't see it.

Both Xia and Maple were nice people but neither of them were very popular while they were actually streaming. In Maple's case he insisted on streaming boring games and focused most of his community interaction on the thread. In Xia's case she couldn't keep a schedule and did random things and random short streams. You might not remember this if you weren't really supportive but Xia was planning on a donathon or subathon a few weeks after starting out at 5 ccv and then graduated around the same time.
