Something that she said not long after she signed with EMI is how from now on, she was gonna take a more consistent direction with the genre and theme with the music, but looking at her past projects, she was already doing that to an extent. She'd stray into other genres, but as far as the themes are concerned, she was already making well directed works. Even UnAlive which jumped around genres every other song had consistent themes of reconciling two sides of one's self to try and push for even greater heights.
In that regard it seems like she was trying to reinvent the wheel for Shinigami Note, which while it touched upon some interesting themes, didn't really dive into them as deep, which I'd pin the "mainstream pop" direction as responsible. The songs chose to repeat the hook or the chorus instead of diving into some of those compelling themes.
I don't think going for a mainstream sound is inherently bad though, according to an interview Flower Boy by Tyler the Creator apparently got shit for sounding "mainstream", but all that did was draw in a wider audience to an album that has an incredible amount of depth telling a story about how an offensive shithead is coming to grips with growing up and realizing new things about himself. At the end of the day it's about the state of the package rather than the method of delivery.
