I think collabs are important once you hit a certain point, but that they act as "stimulants" more than "content."
A streamer is who they are individually. If you focus on collabs, you lose yourself outside of the strongest of edges that you have in relation to others.
You can be part of a group like a Holo gen, or even a Niji gen, and still be a successful solo streamer. You HAVE to be to be able to grow. Collabs can act as small "stimulants" in that they mix together the two fanbases into one for a stream, but just like stimulants in real life, you build a tolerance to their effects. Eventually, the audience will become

Hololive is interesting in that it really does mix both of those into a single whole.
Obviously, every single girl has their own fanbase. It's unique, and you only get "tied together fanbases" once in a blue moon, like the early days of KanaCoco.
But at the same time, at least on the EN side, those fanbases easily overlap into each other, not so much as a consequence of collabs, but as a consequence of the whole group being within about the same "tolerance range" of each other, in terms of content. The girls are all different and unique, of course, but it's rare to have such a different style that they aren't appealing to at least a good chunk of the other girl's fans, too.
I like to think in metaphors, so I can do it here, too:
Hololive (at least EN wise, not as cognizant of JP's various inter-gen overlap audiences) is like a salad dressing in terms of numbers. They're all unique girls with unique boxes, like ingredients to a dressing, but when they get shaken up, they mix into a full whole very easily, and then after a bit, cleanly separate back into their constituent parts without much issue.
I don't know if NijiEN is more like that, or more like a full mix, where the different groups eventually just stick together into a "I'm here for the group, not for you" box, but I'd love to know.

the fact that both anykara and cover seem to be operating similarly is certainly interesting. The fact that both seem to have significant cash balances is also very positive as it suggests that they are being strategic about growth. One thing to note though is that while Anycolor and Cover have similar cash balances, Cover hasn't done a new funding round since May, while Anycolor has increased their cash on hand by about 50% through an IPO raise. The question becomes what Anycolor really intends to do with their est. $10M cash on hand. There really aren't that many acquisition targets and the VTA has been of questionable production. Likely their plan is going to be similar to Koshien-continue acquiring rights to certain IPs to leverage their Livers with for big events. Holo on the other hand seems more interested in doing big events in partnership with companies (that mahjong tournament with Sega's mahjong app as an example).
That is to say, Niji's strategy seems to be about using IPs to have big events with their audience to boost their brand-in other words, the Mr. Beast youtube model. Cover's strategy seems to be more of a traditional marketing mix franchise with individualized pet projects-use the Hololive brand to advertise/market products or events.
Obviously both strategies have their strengths and weaknesses, but it serves to demonstrate just how the two companies are very different. Anycolor is very clearly a "streaming" company, while Cover is a "record label" company.

the reason doesn't actually matter. VOD views are good income if they're in the hundreds of thousands but for Iluna's numbers they're not worth much. Iluna's problems right now are twofold - they have terrible CCV considering their debut numbers, their CCV is horrible (usually peaks early, super inconsistent and often reclines during stream) and their viewers just don't donate much. That's what I mean by "they perform badly in the only metrics that matter for streamers".

I feel like Anycolor's model is a lot more dangerous for them long-term. Well, it should be fine for them as a company, but I don't know if this model can work for the people who work in it.
This may be an overused comparison, but they remind me a lot of Machinima. Just keep throwing it out there, chasing the brands, and hoping that your strong successes allow your brand to keep generating higher. But well, with Machinima, it just... stopped working, one day. And then it shortly fell apart.
I don't think that's likely in the near-term for them, but I wonder if they'll have the insight to vary it up a bit, spend a quarter or two focusing on internal development before using a hot quarter to generate earnings via these big events, make a schedule out of it so you don't expend all of your social capital.

WSJ says that Anycolor has a market cap of 184.46 billion jpy, or 1.38 billion usd.
