To me, there are two different kinds of saplings;

There are the mascot saplings, the tiny little green ball fellers with the stem. These guys are innocent babies that Fauna genuinely dotes on and pampers. They're cute in a wholesome way. They're helpless because they're infants that can't do anything other than roll around, and they genuinely love Fauna. They represent Fauna's sisterly/maternal love for her fans (at least in the eyes of the fans themselves) and so we like them for it.

Then there are the crying saplings, literally just tiny versions of Fauna based on the emotes. These guys are annoying toddlers who Fauna's basically a big sister/mother to, while she either treats them well or acts like a sociopath playing with them. They're cute in a pitiable way. They're helpless because they have the brains of spoiled children that are completely dependent on Fauna for everything to a comic degree. They represent the "I MISS FAUNA" meme as well as the more menhera aspects of Fauna's fanbase (and extreme v-tuber fans in general) and so we either pity them as stupid caricatures or find it entertaining when misfortune befalls them.
