I don't think she is but I don't know enough. There are many types of bipolar disorder. For example I am schizo-affective bipolar type 1. My hyper mania episodes would last for months and I would have auditory hallucinations like God would talk to me through the TV and shit. They thought it was schizophrenia at first.
Anyway, there are much milder forms and it gets over diagnosed, especially if she just went to a hospital and walked out with meds.
Psychological problems need monitoring and I suspect (don't know) she presented with sleeping problems, racing thoughts, and anxiety so they just assumed mania and threw meds at her.

Sorry, a bit busy at the moment. Yes, it is different meds. I was first on anti-psychotics before a doctor notice a pattern and realized I was severly bipolar so they switched me to Lamictal (at the time it was thought Lithium could cause seizures) which is actually a parkisons drug but also works as a mood stabilizer.
I still struggle with depression but I haven't had a manic episode since starting them.
It's a hell of a journey trying to find the right medications. Good luck to you friend. I hope he gets the help he needs
