In a general sense they're there to help tell posters apart and keep track of who is who. This has a purpose on board like /qst/ since you'll want to be able to keep track of people like OP and posters who made certain rolls. On a board like this it won't kill all the problems at all. Bait will still be made, schizos will still run wild and meds will be forgotten. At the very least it'll dissuade the laziest of shitposters that don't now how to get a new ID in the same thread, and my personal theory is that the majority of shitposters are lazy fucks that don't know how to switch IPs.
