The fansub and annotation feature was in YouTube's features since at least 2012-2014 I think. I think YouTube removed announcement since the style of the annotations clashed with the new style they were making for site. This removed subs from older YouTube videos that used them similar to Niconico. As for the fansub feature, it was really hell. Frequently stylized subs would decimated by fags screwing with the timings, though it is still missed.

But that is the end of 2019 results for this, and frankly, people were switching to vtuber as the term to use anyway.

I got to see the rise and fall of 3D preferences, the rise of Nijisanji, and just starting to see the rise of Hololive. Thanks for the thread OP. This was a fun time capsule. Now that I think about it (after reading those screencaps about the transition from 3D to 2D), there's surprisingly little complaints about the lack of advancement in tech. 99.99% of all models are still extremely clumsy and kinda lifeless, the mouth "movement" doesn't match the speech at all etc.

You know what? I think it's time for /vt/ to shift over to higher spec, community driven 3D skinsuits. Creator-driven 3/2D skinsuits were novel, but the novelty's worn off. Now there's a literal metric fuckton of special snowflake chubas competing with each other in a zero sum game for attention and views. I'd prefer they start organizing and consolidating themselves under loosely shared 3D identities, with the underlying shared identity being their chosen character/model rather than just a company affiliation.

In other words, I think Kizuna Ai's biggest problem was just being ahead of her time. 3D movement. Decent production values. A varied mix of prerecorded and live content. Multiple people using the same character to expand the character's abilities, appeal and reach beyond the original's. A character that could be various things to various people, all of whom were united under the banner of a single fictional character.

Maybe I'm completely wrong and retarded, and there's no telling what the future might hold, but vtubing does seem to have become so accessible it's developed potentially irreparable fragmentation problems that will presumably only get worse. Maybe separating the art from the artist might solve that issue.
