Ankidrone Starter Pack.

All "Core" Anki decks are based on newspapers from early 90s and sometimes additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. The cards format also tends to be WCC instead of a more efficient TSC. Ankidrone Starter Pack is made from a COMPLETELY different corpus, everyday words used commonly in Japan.

Katakana is pure shit, but learn isn't as soon as possible otherwise you will be annoyed everytime you see it without being able to read it.
Reading it quickly can only be achieved by reading and writing as much you can. If you see it by chance: Read it!
It will take some time until you truly memorize every character, so you will be slow in the beginning.
Being able to read Kana (+Kanji) without actually looking at every single character, will be achieved rather late:
If you see words often, like "ありがとう" you recognize it by just looking at it (not reading, if that makes sense). Obviously you can't do that, if that word is still unknown to you, so you have to pick up vocab.
How you do it is up to you.
For Kanji - again up to you, but learn at least the basic 80 Kanji, since you see those everywhere.
