Imagine a run of the mill sitcom. Some humour, some romance, some missunderstood situations. Good, but not great.
Then insert a foreign stereotype character who completely upends all that and forces every other character to adjust to that foreign element.
This can and usually does go terribly, of course. But in some cases, it just works. The character is charismatic as fuck, and rather than coming off as an asshole, the character's actually helpful and beloved by everyone. Different, brash, outgoing, but not mean.
Their focus episodes aren't all that great, but as a supporting character, they help everyone else to play to their strength while still remaining unique.
That's Kiryu Coco.
But of course, there are always some people who still don't like that character. Who bitch and moan and grasp at every opportunity, no matter how clumsy, to bring it down. Bugpeople, basically.
And their campaigns do have an effect. The character just doesn't want to deal with the avalanche of bitching anymore and quits. Starts its own spinoff show.
But that means it's no longer a supporting character. The people around it who made it truly great are no longer there. The solo act is something everyone has already seen a million times and is just plain tired of. What was scandalous and funny in the context of the original show, with confused reactions to the culture shock, the character introduced, becomes just tiring and a bit sad when viewed alone, just one person talking at a wall rather than talking to other people.
