I actually am an oldfag m8, sora was not an idol in the beginning, she was a singer that covercorp contracted to market their tech.
Originally, covercorp had no desire to enter the entertainment market, they were going to focus on selling proprietary VR technology with licenses, similar to how Unreal Engine has license and royalty rights.

Covercorp grabbed more girls to originally just market the tech, most of which had their own youtube established channels like miko, in order to market covercorp VR tech.
This is why a lot of early covercorp were VR focused streams.

Eventually, the revenue they were generating from the fanbase made it palatable to the company to restructure the contracts with the girls into a traditional Idol contract.
