Japan seized all the land they wanted from people for the trains. Fuck you if you're in the way. In America that would be so many billions of dollars that it becomes a very expensive investment years before you're making any returns. Japan also had straighter prior railways that could be somewhat upgraded. America's are far older and can't be upgraded one bit. The distances are also far higher in America resulting in exponentially higher costs to create and manage. One single railway means one train at a time. Very few people using it at once on that longer distance. So you build two railways next to each other so you can have a train coming and going right? Costs just went up and that's still not that many people traveling from one city to another over a longer distance and therefor longer amount of time that line is used up. So what you build 4 of them next to each other? How much more money are you looking at?
