Given we're an island nation, we have a steampunk/clockpunk aesthetic and Niji has taken the Japanese motif, it's only natural we take up the mantle of the British navy.
There was also the fact that Niji was discussing how to sink /∞/'s navy and threatened us with war because of a misunderstanding over our pledge to defend /risu/.
So let's keep those jokes of an arms race to a minimum.

We're all friends of course so it shouldn't matter what the operation size of /∞/'s navy is as long as it can be realistically supplied and maintained. I.E. the ironclad's operational distance is confined to the main island since they aren't ocean worthy and our hybrid steam powered ships are restricted to where they can get fuel, unless they use traditional sealing rigs. And even then they aren't suited as heavy transports because the cargo hold is already used to hold fuel.

Also, having the Kronie version of Horatio Nelson is something I will not pass up.

Logistics aside, is the geologicalfag still around, I wanted to know where copper deposits would most likely be located, and if anyone has charted out what species of trees grow where in the world.

Let me explain this politely as to why this is stupid.
>You have no tradition of major shipbuilding, lack the trees, and the supplies to have a large navy, unlike 2434z
>You lack the income, unlike 2434 which spends all of its money on its navy.
>You lack the training of countless generations of sailors to be britain
>You lack the facilities to maintain a large fleet like the Royal Navy
You threaten 2434 and they kept in line with their tradition of not responding well (read their diplomatic post to understand) you cant wish something into existance.

NTA, but this seems unfair. Who says all that has to be true? Good ship lumber can grow in cold climates, and there's no particular reason /inf/ can't have income streams that could fund a navy. A few issues there.

1. They were talking about how to sink them, which is extremely provocative and any reasonable party would see it as a direct threat.
2. My stance was to make sure /risu/ was protected since there were other posts in how they were dead set on having a military presence and it appears to be connected to the trade deal itself and it was done from a perspective where they'd see /∞/ as a threat when you look at the posts about ironclads.
>>27547339
>>27550035
>>27550411
3. Shitposting is no excuse for trying to start a war, especially when their second post >>27818849 is implying /risu/ should take sides in a potential conflict.

Again, I wanted to make sure /risu/ wasn't getting bullied into any deals they didn't want and they responded extremely belligerently, while ignoring the fact they were talking about how to sink our ships. Unrealistically I might add.

Regardless, I want to shoot some things by you before you put the current idea up for a vote in /∞/. Mind putting it on hold so I can get it together?

Yeah, he's definitely more knowledgeable in military stuff than us (then again, by now Alice probably is more knowledgeable than us in that regard), but at the same time /meat/ navy isn't exactly conventional, so I don't really know. The fact that many of them would probably be considered armed merchantman also likely muddle the numbers.

>>27993061
I'm thinking more about drawing inspiration from non-European (or "European", since we have cases like the Ottomans) Mediterranean countries, since they seem to operate in a similar way, while still having enough scale to actually be considered an actual navy. Then again, I guess it isn't very high in priority since it's not like /meat/'s going to war right?

The fact you're trying to hand wave all your actions by claiming it's meta, shitposting or ignorance is not going to cut it.
It's a clear double standard on top of that.

>>27993720
This is going to be a big issue where they can claim anything we do as a hostile act, while they'll pretend they were just shitposting, or stupid.
As for the proposal, the scope of it depends on some third parties I have to try and get in contact with. Also the question of how the fleet in /Risu/ that protects them and facilitates trade will come into play because that was already built and a constant state of civil war would raise questions on how it's maintained.

>> No.27993997

Well, basically /meat/ is supposed to have (or had, in the case of northern holosea) a significant naval presence as part of its legacy as seafaring raiders, and we're wondering if there's a way to gauge that in case someone comes around and ask
>so HOW strong are these wankers anyway?
and having an estimate on numbers of ships and stuff seem like a good place to start in true /vt/ catalog shitpost fashion. Since none of us in /meat/ seems to be familiar with naval stuff, we're wondering if you can help us in that regard.
We did write something about how /meat/ navy works here: https://rentry.org/vtwbg-meatlore#naval-history-of-meat-and-its-influence-on-contemporary-meat-ship-design
It's not exactly galley warfare, although it does contain elements of it, like how it does make use of paddles at times, the sails being more useful than the more prevalent square rig when in unfavourable wind conditions, and the focus on boarding action. Still, RL doesn't have magic smoke or crazy cannibal berserker, so it might not be a 100% accurate comparison.

The clouds roll in. The thunders boom. Lightning strike once, twice, thrice across the snowy landscape. The blizzard stops and resumes in rhythms. The mossbacks nowhere to be seen, the bison had since fled the clearings. Patches of snow, mud, and grass litter the surface. Boot prints frozen in shape.

A distant bellow from the heavens. A thunderous cascade.

In a brief passing, the sky turned green, then red, then blue, all in a myriad of colours. An aurora. The beacon of hope in the cold north, or so it was. Until the colours settled on a peculiar tint. Nay, not a tint but a taint. One for the sky and the cosmic backdrop behind it. One not of this world. One not for the fair of mind nor the faint of heart. A colour that only brings madness to those who ponder for too long. A colour that brings with it knowledge that corrupts the mind.

Far, far, beyond the crater that houses the aether citadel of metal, plastic, and glass. Lies a taiga, quiet and empty. Not anymore. For if one could see closer, shapes begin to appear. Slowly, slowly, slowly, making their way between the trees.

They lumber through the snow and mud.
The fuzzy beasts bear their talons.
The deranged shamans carry their staves.
The hungry heretics whet their blades.
...And for the more recent additions to the family, they fiddle their firearms protruding off their broken suits.

Forbidden knowledge. Forbidden faith. Congregating. Materialising.
The eye of the storm buzzes ominously over the wrecked remains of the station.

They hear it. The voices from beyond.
They see it. The images from the heavens.
They know it. The thoughts from the catalog.

They snigger and guffawed. They have not tasted the blood of Holo worshippers since the time of the green one.

A goddess is falling. War is coming.

>Why do they have such a large navy without an overseas empire and why do they even need it.
A few reasons.
1. They rely on their naval power to protect trade and ensure the markets stay open. Have a lot of Ships of the Line ensure that.
2. They have a unique position of being able to grow the stuff which Euro empires prospered over like spices, sugar, and drugs without overseas colonies.
3. /ahoy/ exists, and it can be inferred they could need it for other purposes. The world isn't filled out so it needs to be understood that we cannot just say "you can't have a large navy because of xyz" when things aren't fleshed out enough.

I personally would drop the number of ships-of-the-line by around 25-30% to accommodate for more frigates and smaller vessels because a lot of work /2434/'s navy do should be pirate hunting and patrols. Depends on how /ahoy/'s navy is structured, but since /2434/'s focus (trade flow & naval based) would probably be confined to their western coast. Since the sea is kinda enclosed the most ships are probably more like what the barbary pirates used than say the Royal navy. In that case force dispersion would be better than concentration since /2434/ doesn't face any immediate naval invasion, but rather piratical activities.

Well, here is the other thing about /ahoy/ They will likely have more ships of the line that the barbary states did because they won't have the same issues as the barbary states. Truth is, I made this as a reference for everyone else to scale towards. They also have the problem of two oceans. It's better to leave it is as now then fixing it later when the map is more filled out because who knows? We could have a major naval power in the Eastern Sea at some point.

/nasfaqg/ collectively probably has an absurdly large navy, far surpassing any individual state, given that it's made up of sea-dependent often multinational companies who compete not just domestically, but also globally. The issue is, well, that it's made out of those independent, fractured company-states, and they are not prone to banding together usually, so even if their fleet is gargantuan, any conflict they participate in will have maybe 10-15% of it engaged at most, probably with some spread on both opposing sides.

Well we do have a rather short coast line and our sphere of influence/interest is very far from /2434/. /Who/'s admiralty wouldn't really concern themselves too much over the naval development of /2434/ especially since they doesn't have much that /who/ can steal from. We would be more worried about /inf/ and /meat/ than any other countries. Since the first one has a tech advantage over us together with the rather tense bilateral relationship. The second is an ally of the first and acts as potential a potential rival to our access to the Eastern Holo continent. (Well probably anyways, not set in stone) Our naval planning would focus on Homeland defense and some shipping protection but I do plan on making it so /who/ is slowly shifting it's strategy to have a bit more global outlook.
That aside I really think you can have a little more leeway when it comes to the actual size of any navies since Vitubia countries are absolutely massive. Of course they probably wouldn't be as densely populated as comparable irl countries of the period we are going for, it still presents more manpower and resources to justify a bigger navy as long as there is a reasonable cause for the country to do so. I think not just you, but everyone should look a bit into how ocean currents and wind would affect trade routes in Vitubia. We just assume ships take the shortest route on the map but the conditions of it would impact the naval strategy massively for every nation.

It's not logistically impossible, it's logistically necessary.
There's a reason why tiny nations like the United Provinces, Venice, Portugal, or in a sense Britain could and did become naval titans. For the merchant ships, it's possible that a single major company has more than a country, if it's focused on shipping. A company-state like VOC had around 300 active, on duty ships in its prime, and that doesn't count the mothballed or idle fleet. If you look up numbers for either the British East India Company or the VOC, imagine it's like that but with 40-50 companies in a single pseudo-country.

Here's is where I take issue with this analogy. You are absolutely correct, but what needs to be said is that Nasfagq doesn't have overseas territories that I know of that can support the number of ships. VOC had Indonesia, Portugal had Brazil, Angola, Mozambique and more, Venice was largely a galley based fleet, and the EIC had india. You can have as many companies as you want but it odesnt change the fact that unless you have an overseas Empire, its impossible to have that many war ships concentrated in one area unless they are galleys. Sheer population, and the amount of wood in the world prevents this too.

/nasfaqg/ doesn't operate on the colonialist logic, though, it operates on more or less "modern" trade-conglomerate logic. It is well past mercantilism, and gathers resources globally from business ventures and investments. A conglomerate like General Electric never owned any land, and yet it was and yet has had and has bigger revenue than 2/3rds of the world.
Besides, it's fantasy logic. The whole identity of /nasfaqg/ revolves around trade, companies, and making absurd amounts of wealth. Hell, the central piece of /nasfaqg/, the stock exchange, essentially creates value out of nothing... and that's an actual game mechanic which was written off in lore as supernatural and somewhat eldritch.

The issue with ships isn't really the wood cost, or size of harbors, it's monetary cost and sailor population. A rich state with a sizeable sailor manpower pool due to a maritime tradition and existing infrastructure can build a much larger fleet than one that just started to focus on the navy, or has other monetary concerns.

Concurring. Ships of the line are VERY expensive to build and maintain. To secure shipping you want frigates that are fast and nimble to catch pirates and other frigates. Ships of the line aren't as slow as you'd think but their sheet cost and being logistical nightmares means ships of the line would be an luxury item for the companies, a flex, if you will. Ships of the line are also not cost efficient at all for the purpose /nasfaqq/ would want the most, ships of the line are really good at beating any ships but that's basically all they are good for. For a country full of ruthlessly efficient conglomerates you'd think they would make smarter decisions than to spam big 80 guns plus warships. I do know anons spend a lot of in-game bucks to buy stupid hats but there are better, more grounded ways to implement it like having them being super lavish instead

>> No.28023728

>> No.28023741

>>28023201
Collectively, I think they could have 100 Ships of the Line or even more, but you need to look at it from an individual company's perspective:
When you have a massive, sprawling company that carved out a niche for itself, it will seek to protect its own interests, and once it gets big enough to essentially act as a de facto state, it will also build up a military to protect its investments. Such a hypothetical being will likely have a single flagship (to flex), probably first-class, and the rest will likely be faster ships like third- or fourth-class vessels (you could also call them just powerful warships or man-o-wars), making the number of their ships-of-the-line to maybe 5. The rest of their fleet will be predominantly frigate- and sloop-based.
They need that fleet for two reasons: first is protecting trade from foreign interests, but the second is also inter-/nasfaqg/ competition. With the companies competing internally, it would result in a naval arms and innovation arms race, as was in the lore for a long time. This is why companies would maintain a sizeable war fleet, albeit likely spread throughout the world just to protect their holdings there.
Multiply that by 30-80 companies like that, and you can see why I would argue about that fleet size.
That being said, even if they get engaged in a conflict, you will have different companies backing different sides, and most will likely just not get involved. The reason the navy is so big is because the income is large, and the income is large because of the sheer scope of operation, which dilutes the number of ships realistically available. In a single conflict, even if it's large, you likely won't see more than 10-20 ships of the line from /nasfaqg/.

>> No.28023927

>>28023640
My point isn't that they are spamming large warships. Quite the contrary, it's extremely slanted towards merchant ships, and when it comes to war fleet, then fast frigates with maybe a single third- or fourth-rate ship-of-the-line warship to commander a naval squadron. It's the number of companies and the scope that inflate it. If /nasfaqg/ was a single united entity, I would agree completely, it would have a navy that's maybe a fraction of what it would have now.

>> No.28023975

>>28023568
I am not going to get into technical aspects when I can make the assumption that they are more seaworthy. Let's see... One of the problems /meat/ will have with /morig/ is simply that it doesn't matter how much you throw at Ships of the Line, the massive size of cannons will destroy these types of ships. 32 pounders will absolutely smash these ships. My recommendation is that you actually go for smaller ships for raids because they would be harder to catch. For larger ships, you'd honestly be better off being asymmetrical in your approach and rely on Fireships, Demolition Ships, and fast frigates to come in to do what you have described. Xebecs are my recommendation for your raiding fleet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xebec
Truth is, Holosea is too big for oar based ships to be effective.

If you agree, I'll dive right into the numbers.

Anon, the VOC and EIC did not have ships of the line. You really need to understand that for a company, there is little reason to have those kind of ships. Maybe they will have massive indiamen with like 50 guns, but nothing like you are thinking because that's not how these things worked.

>> No.28024267

>>28024151
I approve of Bomb Ketchs, that was part of what I was thinking actually. Let's think of numbers....

Probably you have some 150 Xebecs, 25 or so "Capital Ships" which are basically 5th Rate Frigates that you modify for speed and ramming. Fire and Demo ships... 75 in stock but they are easy to build. 20 Bomb Ketches. Seems like a lot of numbers but you are going against Morig.

Man-o-war refers to any heavily armed fighting vessel(so frigates and up). You also need to understand that 1st rates are VERY expensive to make. It's an environment which, if you wanted to really autistically crunch the numbers and go with NASFAQ numbers, has 50% of the world's wealth located just in its financial stock exchange system.
Believe me. I'm doing you a favour by jotting it down as I did before, because realistically /nasfaqg/ does not make historical sense in and of itself, but it does in the context of /vtwbg/ and /vt/ as a whole. Just consider it not as a state, but as a collection of merchant city-states of absurd, unquantifiable wealth, where having and maintaining a technologically advanced single first-rate ship of the line as a flagship and a status symbol is essentially a non-issue from the cost perspective.
And believe me, I agree with you, that in terms of the actual fleets frigates and third- fourth-rate ships like the ones you've listed would likely be preferred. This is just the issue of fragmentation and scale.
