firstly, there are always four players* (there is a three player variant but lets ignore that), one for each of the winds and play proceeds in order of the arrows shown. in a physical game, the tiles are set up in a four sided square wall formation (two tiles high), with players taking from this wall to draw their initial tiles. in a cpu game though this is handled automatically and its essentially just like taking from a deck of cards, because you cant change the order or anything like that, its kinda for show. note that at the start of the game FOURTEEN tiles are taken aside from the "wall" or deck as you might call it; TEN of these are used for DORA indicators, shown in the center of this kiki pic (note they are stacked two high, thus you see only five). The other FOUR are the "dead wall" essentially removed from the game so your winning tile might never show up... however if you naturally form a Kan (four of a kind) and reveal it, your hand will be down a tile, so you draw from this dead wall to replace it as you need to maintain hand size. ill explain DORA later.

note seating order. the dealer is always the EAST player, or rather the EAST player is by definition the dealer. play begins with them and they can earn 50% more points (so go big if you are EAST) but they also pay a little more out sometimes. whenever a hand does NOT end in a draw, the positions of the winds rotates, in the order opposite to play, so that the first dealer EAST becomes NORTH in the second hand. Note the ROUND WIND marker, with the EAST and SOUTH, at the beginning of play it is the EAST ROUND, and when the orginal dealer becomes dealer again, the ROUND changes to SOUTH. traditionally play continued so that there were all four wind rounds, but most modern players think this takes too long, so they only play E and S. Which means 8 hands if none of them are draws. Wind is important because unlike dragons, winds are only really worth points if they match either your seat or the overall wind round (double if they are both).

now what to do with your actual hand:
you start the game with 13 tiles, and on your turn draw a tile and discard a tile. the intent is to form a hand which you can think of as four fingers and a thumb (some special hands like 7 pairs ignore this rule), each finger is a set of three (three in a row, or three of a kind) and the thumb is a pair. once you have a valid hand, you reveal it and collect points (in a real game if you do so but accidentally didnt have a real winning hand because of the dumbs then there is a large penalty, but generally video games dont let you do it so it doesnt matter). note that three in a rows have to be of the same suit unlike poker. there are three suits, and four of each tile (eg 3 of bamboo, red dragon, etc) in the deck.

note that each finger could be upgraded in to a Kan (or Quad) if it is a three of a kind (you cant upgrade three in a rows in to quads). which as mentioned before means you need a replacement tile to maintain hand size (unless you stole it from another player of course). when you do so, you flip over another dora indicator (look at the kiki pic, there are four face down). this indicator means that the tile "1 up" from that are worth more points, so in the kiki pic the 5 of PINS is worth bonus value to all players in scoring if they win, so consider that people will want that tile or the ones around it a little more. forming kans essentially increases the points value because it flips another dora FOR EVERYONE so it may not be a good idea. NOTE as show in the draw image, that if four KANS are made then all four of those bonus tiles will be flipped which is why it forcibly ends the game in a draw unless all four were made by the same player (so if you are losing, and three kans have been formed, you can force a draw by forming a worthless kan, out of spite). This kan just replaces a 3-finger and doesnt essentially change the game otherwise. It will of course need to be "open" as you need to prove to the other players that its real (you lay it flat on the table and pieces in it can no longer be discarded by you).

play proceeds with players drawing and discarding, but of course you have seen people steal tiles. These are CHI (chow), PON (Pow?), and RON (ron) (the game uses chinese names for reasons, but i wont). CHI is for stealing for a 1-2-3 and it can only steal from the player to your LEFT. If another player calls PON on the same tile you try to CHI, that player has preference. PON is for stealing to complete a three of a kind and works from any player. NOTE that this can alter turn order as after PONing you immediate take your turn, so if you PON from the player opposite to you, the player to your left will miss their turn (devilish) as you must immediately discard after stealing their tile. Note that in both cases you must OPEN the tiles you already had to prove that what you are stealing completes one of thes sets. RON is for when you are waiting on one last tile to win, it can be for any tile (even the "thumb" pair which normally cant be stolen for) and even from any player for a 1-2-3 wait unlike CHI.

Note that there are some rules for RON, which is that you cant win, if you are waiting on a tile you previously discarded (so late in the game you can see which tiles are safe to discard agains a player in richii by throwing pieces they already put away).

Note that keeping your whole hand closed (no stealing) can be worth more points, you win by TSUMO if you self draw, and if you are one away from winning in this manner, you can declare RICHII, betting an extra 1000 points on the hand to inflate your winning score if you do win, but this locks you into only drawing and discarding the tile you drew until you win or lose. If you do win in this manner, and only in this manner, then you also get to look at the URADORA, the tiles underneath any revealed DORA to get some extra bonus points if any happen to match tiles in your winning hand.

Note that it is not enough to simply form a valid configutation in japanese mahjong, unlike chinese mahjong, here you MUST get one of the "YAKU" if you will as shown in this image or the hand is worth nothing. Just study the image, or keep it with you when playing. Note that the STARS are max points hands (worth like 32k or 48k as dealer) in one hand so they are fairly rare "royal flush" types. Note that DORA provide bonus yaku of a sort, in that they give you extra YAKU, but if its your only source, then they actually dont.

now for actual scoring of a winning hand. for computer play all you really need to know is the yaku in the previous image as what follows is auto calc'd on computer and only gives minor points differences anyway. mainly online its only needed to know how to earn the PINFU (a zero value hand) YAKU. just knowing that many yaku = good is enough really and that they stack. Note that a three of a kind green dragon is worth 1 YAKU, but for DORA, if the DORA was 5 PIN, then 4-5-6PIN is worth one bonus YAKU, but 5-5-5PIN (or 5-5-5-5PIN kan) would be worth 3 (or 4) bonus yaku. I wont explain the FU in text as you can just read the image and ignore if you dont understand due to CPU calcing it.

Each total YAKU moves you DOWN on this chart shown (the dealer gets the better one below) so one hand with 13 yaku is worth more than winning 13 hands with 1 so you would ideally like to make complicated hands if you can.

Note the HONBA bit however, each time there is a draw, this is a counter which increases until someone wins and breaks the draw streak. This awards 300 bonus points to their score for each counter, thus if there is 10 draws in a row, the next win gets 3000 extra points to their score for breaking it.

The score shown is the total score won. If you win by RON then that player has to pay the entire thing. If you win by TSUMO the score is payed divided up by the other players (shown in brackets). note that it rounds up as the physical score sticks exist in minumum integers of 100 points. Note the difference in the brackets between the dealer and non dealer chart. If the dealer wins simply each player pays the equal amount shown, but if a non-dealer wins then there are two values. The amount won is not divided by three, but by four - the dealer pays a double share shown as the larger amount in the brackets. So if a non-dealer won a max value hand, they would win 32k, 8k payed by each of the other non-dealers and the dealer paying 16k.

I think this is everyting, except for certain specific rules like not being allowed to target specific players, sacred discard, etc, so if you choose not to PON (or RON) a tile that is discarded and the next player follows up with the same discard, you cant then RON them just because you hate that player and want the points the come from them; essentially becomes a SAFE tile until that player discards again. Hopefully i explained it in an easyish to understand way, but you can see that its not too complicated to learn the rules - its just learning the odds of specific things, actually paying attention to other players discards to divine what hands and tiles they are looking for, etc thats actually hard
