I was having a conversation with someone the other day and we were talking about how in the 90's and 2000's, if you wanted to talk to your friends, you could call them up with landline telephones. Being more easily to connect people and share information definitely leads to the benefits and detriments you list. The interesting step comes in the near future. The timeline you have here is a little jumbled. Landline phones have been around longer than anyone currently alive, so I have no idea what it was like before that. Even with landlines you used to just show up in the neighborhood where your friends lived and see what they were up to. But over time, just asking that question becomes optimized. Communication with voice or video needs both people to be free. For that type of message, texting a short message is most efficient.

Maybe with those changes in standard communication do we get stuff like sharing memes instead of conversations. Its convenient to just throw shit out there and see what sticks and what people react to, than working on something more effort-intensive. Social media seems to thrive off that kind of input with how retweets/likes/upvotes/(you)s work. Maybe thats part of the reason why cultures break containment.
