The downside of my job, if you can call it that, is that it's very comfortable and predictable and not very taxing. But I'm the senior-most employee at the moment and even my boss is leaning on me to tell her what to do and it's killing me inside. I'd rather be my own boss then and optimize my income a bit more.
That being said, like you said, this kind of stuff really requires a big network of clients who are at least semi-regular so I can't just jump straight into it...
I need to stay away from looking at hourly rates and assuming I would be working 40 hrs/week with editing because there's no guarantee for that, especially not in the beginning, plus I think it would drain me more than my current job does and I'd be even less inclined to stream which would make the whole switch pointless...

I really want to start clipping my own stuff too so I might just go down in time 20% or so if I can and spend that day working on edits and such...

yeah i get it, i wouldn't do it if i didn't get any happiness and satisfaction from it. if you want an example of time management it takes me 2 hrs of "work" to put together a 2 min video, which includes looking for the clip, subs, actual edits, and thumbnail making if it's going to be a youtube vid also. i'm not the most efficient worker so someone who values their time can probably cut that down to an hour and a half

I used to edit for a friend's let's play channel so my weekends often went into that... But I tend to go through stuff at 2-2.5x the speed when I'm listening for interesting content.
I'll be timing myself when I edit for my friends now in July to see how long things take and what I should be charging, but that's a good number to compare to I think!

"proper rate" for editors is quite high, youtubers with highly edited weekly videos with motion graphics and stuff are paying upper hundreds $USD per week for them, and you have to be making a decent amount to be able to afford a regular editor. short of working for a vshoujo or someone adjacent to them, it's gonna be hard to find someone who can afford to have you regularly editing stuff unless they're underpaying you (or you're doing very simple editing). the play, I think, is to get good at doing MV editing/animating and shill to the TBA crowd doing a bunch of one-offs.
just from personal experience, the reason I only take "commissions" from friends/people-I-want-to-edit-for-anyway is because what they consider a "good rate" often pays me less than US minimum wage if you break it down by work hours.

if you get past that you'll realize that not all people who watch your holo clips will also watch your indie/small corpo clips because holo fans rarely watch chuubas outside hololive. you have a better chance of your viewers overlapping if they're small/medium corpo watchers

I have been thinking about the exact same thing. I came to the conclusion that its all fair game to grow your channel, even if you don't watch Gura or Ame or whoever you end up making clips of.
At the end of the day all youre making is clips for people to watch, even if you yourself dont enjoy the content that much.
LazySusan had a massive growth spurt when a clipper with 50k subs made some clips of her and they ended up in people's recommended videos tabs.

if you're making clips (or fanart or any other creative endeavor) of a larger thing because you just want to do it, that's fine. doing it to clout chase or even for the more altruistic reason of "wanting to get more eyes on my content for the smaller people I also do things for" is really transparent and not even that effective unless you get hit by the algo RNG. you go from being the big fish in a small pond of content creators for some small guys to becoming a guppy in an ocean of people doing it for the big names. and there's nothing wrong with that if it comes from a genuine place, but it's like thinking you'll become the next gura by just streaming minecraft and apex all day.

I used to be afraid that any attempt to grow my audience would make my edits look disingenuous, like I was just editing for the numbers or clout rather than because I cared about the streamers, but people haven't seemed to think that, so I think as long as I stick to people I actually enjoy watching I can keep a clear conscious on it

Seems like a good compromise between "clipping small chuubas you like" and "clipping big chuubas to grow." Since you like their content anyway, I'm sure the sincerity will show through the clips. Really though I just like your clips in general and would probably watch them regardless of which chuuba you were showing off.
