It's a little more nuanced than just "hero", because the treaties he forced on them were pretty bad. He is definitely not viewed as a villain, and the Japanese are definitely not mad about him. The Tokugawa bakufu is not seen as some enlightened leadership of a golden era that ought have continued.

There was definite anti-Western sentiment at the time but that passed pretty damn quickly with the Meiji Restoration. A diplomat was there at the start, came back 10 years later, and said it was like 2 different worlds. He said on his first visit he said, "I distinctly remember the middle ages", and 10 years later he comes back, everyone is wearing western clothes, the average educated person is speaking pretty good english, and now all their conversations were about "bullion, battleships, and spheres of influence".

How Japan reacted to the black ships event was such a clever move. 50 years later they obliterated not only the Pacific Russian fleet but also the Baltic one (after a journey of 28.000 km, Hitler was Right about Slavs kek), becoming basically the most powerful country in the region (China was in shambles despite their abismaly high population, literally almost zero offensive power). Such a pity that they got too cocky and got nuked, but Japan is truly an amazing country

Actually Japan had a higher chance of forcing the USA to sign a peace treaty than Germany doing the same with the Soviet Union. At the point of declaring war Japan was just trapped at China, despite easily invading the main regions of the country they couldn't force China into surrendering due to how huge China is (but unlike the soviets, they barely had enough resources to kick out the nips). In Midway the Americans had huge luck, an AI made thousands of simulations and the outcome that actually happened was an extremely unlikely scenario. If Midway was favorable to the Japanese the war at the Pacific would had been an stalemate for a year or so at least

>> No.26907248

>>26906620
>>26906946
Agreed, Japan could have drawn out the Pacific war in a dozen alternative scenarios, but it there was a ticking clock as the European war wound down. Russia broke its nonaggression pact with Japan early, but even if they didn't violate it, it often goes forgotten that it was only a 5-year agreement, and would have expired later in 1945 anyway. Stalin never met a territory he didn't covet, and so even if the US was stymied in the Pacific, a Russian dogpile would have eventually been overwhelming.

Here's the problem with this: no one outside of the high command of the Japanese Navy, including the Army, knew that Japan lost Midway until after the war was over. It'd be bad for the US if we lost but Japan for the most part didn't even know the battle happened.

Don't forget the US issuing an embargo on exports to Japan, and freezing assets in the US. America was itching for war and was doing literally everything humanly possible to harm the japanese and starve them out to the point where the Japanese, 100% unironically believed that if they sailed past the Philippines with Oil from indochina that they would be blockaded or attacked in a surprise worse than pearl harbor.
Keep in mind america already was sending volunteer air forces to China to fight against Japanese planes in April, months before pearl harbour.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Tigers

In their mind it was Cripple the Americans or wait for them to bomb us before the war even starts.
America was also looking for every excuse imaginable to declare war on Germany as well but The magic mustache was so god damn well behaved with America despite provocation that it took the Japanese to start it.

>The vast majority of americans were very against the war
True in general. However, public opinion is never fully coherent, and people were sympathetic to China. Most people didn't want to do anything about it, not go to war, but they felt bad, hence the aid to China that >>26932380 described. Not unlike Ukraine of the present: nobody wants to go to war for them, but a lot of people feel bad about it, so the public is generally supportive of "sending aid" in an abstract sense. You know, just aid to help them with a war, because that's not actually war, right?

Additionally, the particular journalism of that era in the US was feeding people war porn about Japan's conquest of China. I am not pointing to anything as false (or as true), but more to the style: the reporting used extremely dramatized writing, because that kept people buying papers. It laid the groundwork for seeing the Japanese as something beyond aggressors, as irrationally brutal, so that when Pearl Harbor came the public already had a background attitude of "Well we had heard they were madmen!"
