You could definitely get to producing tools yourself, and to a positive balance, before your money ran out in 1602. The key to success is building a lot of woodcutters and residences, and offsetting the costs of the tool production by producing alcohol asap.

I feel that AoE2DE is okay for the retro, because it basically the same game with some minor visual overhaul. But, for example, Reignited Trilogy doesn't feel retro, because the artstyle and engine look so much different comparing to original PS1.

I've come to the conclusion that Super Metroid is too cryptic. Random hidden blocks everywhere, which would be fine if they were only for optional content. But it feels like a lot of the critical path is also behind obscure hidden routes.
