You'd be surprised by how many people are willing to member regardless. In Japan, membership is seen more as supporting the talent just because rather than getting something out of it. The member streams are a bonus. Plus there's a lot of them that use membership as a blog, off the top of my head Marine for the JPs and Watson for the ENs comes to mind.
