It's good, balance probably needs some work but I'm honestly impressed.
The one annoyance so far is that it doesn't let you use the mouse in the menu and the controls are default bound to arrow keys with z as confirm (enter only works on the main menu not in-game).

Trying it right now and it's pretty solid.
I like way more the character and menu designs than Vampire Survivors and, i haven't played the original in a long time, but it feels like it's somewhat deeper than it; specially for a demo.
Pretty worthwhile for them to do a stream about it.

New engine, performance issues, and promised features pushed back
When I first launched Vampire Survivors, all I wanted was to have a little game that would allow me to have fun making new game content in my spare time. Thanks to your incredible support and a once-in-a-lifetime surge of luck, the game turned out to be an incredible success instead.
Getting help from some friends to try fix all the issues deriving from such a huge player base got very soon unsustainable, so I've also started a parallel project to port VS to an industry-standard game engine with the help of trusted freelancers.

The port to the new engine is going smoothly and the game is already fully playable, lacking mostly in polish and content, but we also ran benchmarks that show a tenfold increase in performance (and so in framerate).

The port going well is the reason why a few features promised back in January haven't been developed on the current version yet, like key-remapping, increase responsiveness when switching screens, localised text that fits the available space etc...
It's just more time effective to implement those things directly in the new engine, and the same goes for worrying about game performance and hardware compatibility.

While there could be a lot of stuff getting drawn on screen in VS, the real bottleneck are the physics calculations that are stuck on using only a single CPU core, which is why not even having powerful modern hardware guarantees a smooth gameplay. That list of hardware includes the Steam Deck unfortunately, with the game's performance dipping to an embarassing slideshow near the end of a run, while other graphics-intensive games run at a buttery 60fps.
The new engine will ensure VS runs like butter too.

We're aiming to release the version on the new engine in the summer. The executable will be completely different, but Savedata will be moved over of course.

After playing through all the Myth characters, I can safely deduce the Dev is a Takodachi. Ina is the best character starting out and only gets better with upgrades.

Fantastic passives, her normal is pretty much just a better version of Gura's, ridiculously good CC which is great since enemies are tanky, passive healing with her tako ability, great slow, get stronger when there are enemies nearby which synergizes with her void skill, ult is just a lawnmower that deals a fuck ton of damage and makes a lot of space. Also best base speed in the game

Probably the best dps from what I've played, Dancer is pretty much a free + 80% damage, shield synergizes great with the body pillow and sake which boosts her dps more compared to the other girls since her normals and passives have a lot of ticks, Trailblazer kinda sucks but it makes her kiting really good since enemies that walk through it are slowed, her ult gives a nice pushback but other than that it kinda sucks

Gura
Her normal is not that great, it's just worse Ina's, her passives synergies are great though, whirlpool gives really good CC and synergizes fantastically with shark bite since you can build a lot of stacks using that, her dodge can get you out of sticky situations but it's not as good as Kiara's shiled since hers is luck based. Ult is pretty mediocre though the speed boost is highly appreciated.
Mori
Her scythe has issues, her passives give her good dps but Kiara's damage output is kinda better and kiara has better defense and speed than her, her killing passive is easy to use which makes her pretty strong and fast though that speed can fuck you up Ult isn't that great but the damage buff from it is good but very overkill since one of her passives is already an instakill

Ame
Her weapon fucking sucks, her passives are pretty shit, bubba isn't that great, better crit and damage are literally regular skills that you can gain by leveling up or buying from the shop, her ult is probably the best from what I've played, a global freeze that buffs your attack speed is fantastic and can be used in any situation but sadly the rest of her kit is pretty trash.

Uh Mumei might be overturned like Ina. Maxing out Mumei's standard weapon to it's awakened state turns it into a 5 shot homing projectile that can PASS THROUGH the same target multiple times. If you focus down a boss for example your essentially shooting it 25 times PER regular attack.

Yeah after beating the Stage mode with Mumei she's probably up there with Ina in terms of how strong she is.
- Standard attack when maxed into awakened state basically plays the game for you as the multiple homing projectiles tend to pierce targets multiple times in a row. I ended up melting Fubuzilla and Smol Ame in literal seconds.
- Her damage buff abilities are permanent buffs that get stronger the more enemies you kill. In a game like this killing 100 enemies is really easy so you snowball really damn fast in terms of raw damage.
-Friend is REALLY good. He's practically adding an extra upgrade layer to any projectile based items and effectively doubling the pick up range on top of that.
-True Horror is a get out of jail free card. Be warned don't use it if theirs still boxes and anvils on the ground but her Ult effectively no sells the "Obstacle" waves.

You are just bad, only one of her skills activate when taking damage, you must have her base skill to lvl 7 because it will multi hit and ensure crits, don't level up the hope passive more than lvl 1 unless you are actually doing a self damage build.

I think the all character leaderboard is bugged, I went through the top 1000 and didn't see a single Mori, Ame, Bae or Fauna, I even did a mediocre mori run to test it, I wouldn't have been anywhere near the top but I know I scored higher than some of these that I'm seeing, and the number one for Gura and Fauna are both well above the number one on the all character board.

Some things I've noticed:
>Ame's super shreds bosses pretty well, though her basic attack alone is underwhelming.
>Mumei's fully upgraded basic attack can basically solo carry all the way up till Q shrimp/deadbeats
>Coco's fire breath collab weapon kills everything. Stage mode is a joke with it.
>Sana does well with the Tarantula Ramen + her passives to basically never have anyone get near you.
Overall fun game. Not sure who's my favorite to use so far but the farthest I've made it in Endless mode so far was with Sana.

Played Gura again with earphones and she's probably A tier. I think sake would work much better than spicy coffee since one of Gura's passive is a 35% chance to avoid an attack which directly weakens having an item that boosts her crit when hit. Sake is still active when you get hit with the body pillow active or when an opponent misses you or earphones negate an attack which means that sake is active for a longer time than coffee. I still think Ina's CC added with the instakill and self-sustain is better than Gura's kit but I think Kiara and Gura are about equal now in terms of power level

This game would make ridiculous amounts of money if cover monetized it.
