I like some of the girls but obviously not all of them, and I'm largely a bigger fan of the Stars than the girls which is unusual, so sometimes it's annoying when people assume you like the girls too and start to mix them so much. I think it's a split issue, in general the boys aren't very lucky with the algo, which is something pretty important in popularity, specially with how YT's work, but it's also true that several of them don't put much effort into actually getting there even if by force, that or their efforts take time to bear fruit (which is unacceptable in the algo's eyes) or go into stuff that ultimately doesn't interest many outside of their existing reach or that have lost popularity in the algo's eyes or that takes time to catch on.

I can see a good discrepancy between:

In my opinion... I think it's more of a mix of the three. They are trying to expand Holostars more, something I notice seeing that 1st Gen is planned to collab more often. At the same time, Oga replaying old games often, Roberu and his frequent collabs outside of Holostars, Rio trying to be the one who does the most collabs outside of Holostars, Fuma and his more classic Rap style...

That said, I feel that some members are very much in a comfort zone with their small and dedicated fanbase and have no plans, at least for now, to try to expand that. That's a bit what I observe in Miyabi, Temma, Shien... Miyabi could be putting more effort into the niche of MMOs and RPGs, Temma could try more roleplay with the whole knight thing and the Dark Knight counterpart... And Shien could come back with his Theater, or try to do more Voice Acting situations in stream; maybe a dynamic stream where he unrolls a scene using randomly chosen chat suggestions?

As for Astel, Gamma, Uyu and the rest... I find it hard to say for sure. Gamma is certainly ambitious, he himself said that his goal is to be the biggest male vtuber in the world during his debut and, at least for now, he seems to be doing well... At least a dedicated fanbase that loves to throw supas at him, he has, besides being charismatic. Uyu I feel is going on a more Arupapa route of streaming several things and several different ones at that, but also trying to pull in a bit of Astel and his Astelleda hell experience from Resistance Streams; he needs to find a good niche for himself, ironically, he is a zatsudan monster like Roberu, but doesn't really seem to be making use of it... Let's see when he does collabs, if he does, outside of Holostars

Roberu (and a small smattering of Rio/Ollie/Bae collab) shows for me inbetween holo clips, possibly since the bae clips are popular right now and the algo is possibly associating Bae and council with him right now. Eh yes and no. Yoshida has his hands full with FF16 and FF14 but continues to find time to do the things that he wants to himself. Nomura is also a fairly decisive artist when it comes to character concepts. https://static2.gamerantimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/KH-Keyblade-1.jpg Sora is the best example of this. Disney Vetoed the Chainsaw one, so he did one with a keyblade and most likely his animation team asked for it to be easier to make a model for and the writing team most likely brought up at non interfence between world thing, so we got a merge clothing wise of the two and a more human version.

Oops forgot to add, you can see who became Irvine and Quitsis from this because he wasnt sure of the designs here (note the less details) and how he wanted to do something intresting with Zell and Seifers face soe he left it blank.
Even the revolver was give room to evolve, but overall he was sure what he wanted and how many characters he and the team he was working for wanted to be playable.

I'm the Tsubasa Yamaguchi anon, but even her might be somewhat busy because of Blue Period. Two other mangaka that I thgouht about who could do a great male Vtuber design would be Akira Amano from Psycho-Pass (I know she's more well known because of Reborn but I'm basing myself more on PP's designs) and Q-Hayashida from Dorohedoro. Their male characters have striking looks that aren't super common with male vtubers right now.

Also I agree. Nomura's kid would have to actually be a variety gamer and a final fantasy fan. Maybe not good, but they would have to fill that niche and enjoy games. Being an artist would help too.
