Plushies involve a lot of manual labor, you can automatize a lot of the cutting and stitching sure but the placement and refining has to be done by hand still. The materials are too soft to be fully automatic. But even then the biggest expense in plushies development is the concept phase, making the patterns, trying the materials, etc. You really have to get into the 100k range of products to start seeing a profit and i doubt Cover sold that many, and they only sold them for 30 bucks which is like ridiculously low price for a niche hobby plushie. Its easy to find 40-50 usd plushies on Amazon about popular characters.
