That is one facet, but not the whole picture. Parents feel comfortable letting their kids watch a little cartoon baby shark girl play videogames sure, but they're a minority of the audience. Her core appeal, odd as it is to say, is the fact she's a major weeb and has obviously been immersed in internet counter-culture for most of her life.

As much as this board drones on about parasocial relationships most of the people who talk about it are in denial of its nature. Gura's major appeal is the parasocial relationship whether you view her as an entertainer, a distant friend, or a star-crossed lover. The key point to make here is that she does not intentionally exploit the people that love her.

Gura is the most subscribed vtuber because she's the most subscribed vtuber. There are reasons for how she got ahead, but the massive gap between her and Calli is simply because people subscribe to Gura because she's the most subscribed.

The main reason she got an early head start was not so much because of her childish behavior or appearance. It was simply because during HoloMyth's debut she was appraised by her genmates. Anyone who subscribed to one of HoloMyth most likely also subscribed to Gura. Then new people who wanted to get into HoloEN saw that she was the most subscribed member and subscribed to her simply because of the big number. This carried over after she became the most subscribed in Hololive to anyone who wanted to get into Hololive in general, and then it carried over to now when she became the most subscribed vtuber to vtubers in general. People just see the big number and feel compelled to also subscribe out of a mixed feeling of curiosity and conformity.

Any other reason is nonsense. If it was because she was a loli, then every loli vtuber would be right behind Gura in the charts. But you don't see that. She's just become the default vtuber, so anyone who wants to follow a vtuber go to her first.
