It's a situation where she was also speaking a bit of japanese as well. For me at least when I speak japanese, all my english words turn into what they sound like in katakana because it feels more natural. I feel like it sounds weird to just swap accents midway through contexts.

What helps is talking slowly, loud and enunciating each syllable clearly.
Repeat it a couple of times and if you are not understood try rewording.

Take this story from Korone for an example if you actually give a fuck. Even just getting the tone wrong can cause confusion. Now imagine on top of that pronunciation that is strange and uncommon to Japanese people.
Katakana renderings do help Japanese people understand since those are the pronunciations they are used to.
