I feel like its a nervous response in trying to kill dead air, so sometimes I would say something very reactive like "oh my god that guy killed me". Not saying impulsive reactions can't be entertaining but I feel like verbally reiterating what happened in the stream is very redundant and not very engaging to viewers. So I think the correct path when being reactive is to try showcase your personality. Maybe be more emotionally expressive to the point of cartoonish exaggeration, relate what happened to a personal life experience, or verbalize my thoughts on how the event happened and what I could do to prevent it.

This might be very obvious for most people but for an anti social loner like me I actually had to put some thought into it.

there's a reason react content is popular and one of them is the fact that you want to see that person's specific way of reaction to stuff and that includes the way a person does commentary
but honestly it's probably the hardest part of being a streamer, i've been trying to analyze the commentary of big Vtubers and there really seems to be nothing special done by most of them
your special doesn't need to be insightful or smart or even funny (but that does help), it just needs to portray your personality and your thoughts
one of my favorite ways to do commentary comes from Odette, even though a lot of people here would say she's just a blabbermouth her particular way of speaking coupled with her personality is very unique and interesting to listen to, even if a bit annoying at times

If anything, lurking these threads have inspired me to drop the idea of vtubing and just try my best to be a normal streamer. As a guy, I see no reason to put an avatar over myself. It can happen later if any fans want it to, but starting out as a vtuber being a guy seems like a genuine waste of resources. No one cares about a man's OC character or lore that will never come into play for anything. I thought vtubing was a great opportunity to mix a character with an IRL self and do fun things with lore, but the more I observe the more I realize the general audience just does not give a single fuck about men or about lore even if it's lore from cute girls, corporate or not. Thanks /asp/, you have convinced me to just stream normally and specialize in a game or particular game genre instead.

You're free to quit, but it's so strange to me that people are this blind to what's around them, including the "anti" males. Being a regularly streamer is arguable much, MUCH harder than being a chuuba these days, at least just starting out. Being a chuuba may not be the easy boost it was years ago, but it gives you a niche and somewhat of a community to freely tap into from the get-go.

A majority of the chuubas who started and grew to up to a thousand+viewers in a year would likely be nobodies and 2views if they DIDN'T have an avatar. Pandering comes in more forms than "I'M SEXY I HAVE A SEXY AVATAR LOOK AT IT ITS SEXY IM ACTING SEXY", which is why your avatar doesn't necessarily NEED to be overtly attractive. Not everyone is going for the angle, male or female. Like I said, there's more to a design than just "how sexually attractive can I make this" and we've seen a plenty of non-anime or non-"standard" chuubas make headway this last year or two, enough so that there's plenty of other avenues to take when it comes to what your model looks like.

In my incredibly deep and meaningful post, I used the adjectives HOT and SEXY as an appealing and pretty model, something that's nice to look like. I wasn't my intention to talk about personality or persona, is purely looked at aesthetic purposes, the first thing people will look at when they get to a vtuber stream is their avatar, if you have an "ugly" avatar I'm less likely to stay cause it's not nice to my eyes. That's my position, you don't have to act as an ikemen but having a conventional attractive model makes the whole stream more appealing to the group of audience I am a part of.

you can have a good aesthetic model that isn't hot or sexy but in general its subjectivity at that point. there's different character tropes to fill and even in design they might end up more quirky / neutral than pure sex. but in the end just like female chuubas can pander with their model, males can do it too and I still believe it's what most viewers want out of vtubers.

No one thinks like this, you're definitely in the minority here but people like you shouldn't really be giving advice that applies to you and maybe a handful of other people.

Most people are creating designs they themselves like with audience as a secondary but still important thought, that includes both successful and unsuccessful people. For the most part though these things overlap and just about everyone aside from a few special snowflakes likes something that a general audience also finds appealing. Just using SunKenji as an example, I recall he shared his "mood board" for the character and it was just made up of different character traits and themes that he likes, things general enough that basically anyone would like them.

It seems like there's always 10-20 people debuting every single day which sorta kills the magic and mystique of being a vtuber in my opinion. I know the accessibility of making a model is easier than ever but I miss those days of either paying a Jap artist thousands for a model or making one yourself on undocumented, untranslated, Japanese software
