The secondary canon makes reference to Watson having a daughter in later life. That's the gimmick.

I dunno, why did they put a rabbit in the RPG party generation? At the end of the day Watson has the best design conceptually of the lot of them, they've gone way to hard on making everyone be some kind of creature, the best designs are the ones that are just normal people.

The "victorian detective facing incredible supernatural things" is a classic trope of the fantasy/horror subgenre called Weird Fiction, in which traditional enemies like vampires, werewolves and cults get "updated" to be explained by more bizarre ways like aliens and monsters of the deep.
Holomyth falls into this category to the T. You have 2 lovecraftian monsters (Deep one, Priest of the Ancient ones (aka Cthulhu) 2 classical monsters (Phoenix and Death) and the typical protagonist detective.
As to why they went this direction? Werid Fiction is incresibly popular here on the west. Particularly Lovecraft, it's pretty good concept.

Ame fits fine, it's just combining the idea of a paranormal investigator with the most iconic "investigator" aesthetic people are aware of. Plus the Victorian get-up gives her an antiquated look that pairs well with someone that investigates pulpy things like Lovecraftian horrors or lost underwater civilizations. It's anachronistic but expecting accuracy to that degree from hololive is asking a bit much.
