Honestly this just feels like something you should fix up in editing if you're getting stuck here while writing something. Though if you're not stuck at writing but editing, that 'her eyes widened' problem can probably be fixed by varying up how the emotion expressed is seen/written. i.e focusing the narration on a different part of the body language.
As for the 'basic prose' problem. That sounds like you need a beta reader or some other form of outside viewpoint. You may be thinking it's too basic due to having read it so much whereas an outside viewer might disagree.

I actually got around to reading shrunken troubles, after seeing it touted as a shock fic so many times. And I'm really surprised. It's not written like a shock fic at all - I'm ashamed to say it's written really well, choice of content aside, and I managed to get off to it. I think Paradise Lost is definitely intended to shock though. I read that too and it's almost comedic how the setup is as innocuous as possible and then fucking everything happens all at once. Feels like the author focused on packing as much disgust as possible into the first paragraph because it's just a wallop. I got whiplash with how quick that went from 0 to 10. Was very funny.

At the time I was making Shrunken Troubles, I had no intention or expectation of it being for anyone other than my commissioner because I figured the fetish was niche enough that people would just throw a shit fit over it. So I uploaded it with false tags to trick the first clueless fool or two that went in expecting Fubuki x Shion yuri, but it turns out a lot more people enjoyed it than I expected. I suppose if you put enough effort into something, then it's hard for at least some people out there to not enjoy it.
