I was pretty nonplussed at the debut of Kizuna AI back in the day. It was one of the first times I actually felt like I was old and no longer 'with it', that something in the zeitgeist of my niche subcultures was simply too ineffable for me to grasp. Then came Korone, Pekora, Gura, et al.

I'm not sure if I can tell the full story, but to cut a long story short, I've been keeping an eye on male VTubers for about a month now very studiously, and I felt cocky enough to think I could do what these guys could do.

Thought they were just a virtual AI doing whatever chat tells them to until a couple friends in discord were talking about how vtubers somehow seem more real and relatable than real cam streamers. That was when the gigguk video about it just came out so I checked that one to get a gist what this vtuber thing is even supposed to be. From there went to check out a couple channels, kinda liked what I've seen especially the viewer appreciation that was kinda new to me, jumped around EN streamers a bit, checked the JP side beyond just clips, liked it even more, started doing my reps etc and now I'm here.

Kizuna AI did a cover of Pewdiepie's "Hej Monika". I thought her thing (vtubing) was really cool so I watched a bunch of her stuff that got translated. Due to being busy at the time, I stopped watching. Eventually I got less busy and found Korone who I thought was funny but only watched casually and didn't really know much about her or hololive. Once I saw Gura I really got into the rest of hololive and watch vtubers a lot more now.

Watched Kizuna Ai when she was big. Then stopped watching for a bit and fell back into it when Miko's nigga clip blew up. Kept watching after that and it was great.

Then I discovered Nijisanji and that pretty much ruined vtubers for me. From the terrible talents to the toxic fans, to the toxic male vtubers that they employ. It destroyed the "magic" that vtubers had for me.

Heard about Hololive during their promotion with Azur Lane. Didn't really get it and didn't follow up. Then heard about the Mori Canada vs US superchat thing from another streamer I was watching. Looked up a clip of it and started getting more Holo stuff in my recommendations. Watched a clip of Fubuki doing something goofy and cute and was instantly charmed.

I was randomly recommended Pikamee's Little Misfortune stream VOD, watched it, enjoyed it, but tried her other content and didn't find it as entertaining. I sought out similar youtubers and found Gura eventually after trying a few others (Hana Machia, and then Mori which led to Gura)
Even then though, I didn't really become a big fan until HoloEN started to loosen up in early 2021, before that I was pretty casual

One of my buddies in a group chat started posting Gura and I instantly recognized HER voice. I prodded him until he started gushing about it, and made fun of him for watching anime girls play video games.

Didn't really know about vtubers back then, but after my ex broke up with me at the beginning of 2020, I tried to fill the void with seriously trying out dating apps and looking for a new job. When those failed, I turned back to anime and manga.

I saw Garnt's video on hololive and started watching the HoloJP clips featured in the video. Got really into Korone and Pekora and just discovered more and more about hololive from there.

Didn't even look into EN until Ame started Outer Wilds in December. By then, I was watching daily.

I only got introduced and the only clips I kinda got hooked is Pekora's. Then I randomly joined Pekora's minecraft Rashomon stream. TFR led me to HFZ, which introduced me to hololive and others

a drawfriend of mine got me hooked by talking about the rushia stuff. i wasn't too interested, only knew about gura and pikamee at the time but i fell down the rabbit hole and i'm mainly interested in the yabs and poking at the schizos. I don't really have the attention span for streams and I find some of the models hot.

I think like most people, they were bored as fuck during the lockdowns and was desperate for any new content.

Ai is the reason I started watching them, Pekora is the reason I came back.

Back when Ai was blowing up I had a friend who was into her and would send me clips but I didn't really "get it" and this was before TL clippers were a thing so there were no subs.
Never thought much of it but a while later I saw the clip of Ayame getting her big Mario kart win. Thought it was cute, watched it a few times, but I didn't really know what a vtuber was and didn't get it.
Vtubers stsrted getting talked about more and then the HoloEn debut was getting really hyped up. I tuned in and slowly started making my way down the rabbit hole after that.

I watched Etika long before he an hero'd himself. During one of his streams he mentioned Kizuna Ai. He was surprised at how technology has evolved to the point where "An AI can have her own YouTube channel and upload videos." I think what he didn't noticed at the time that it was a just a vtuber model. Regardless I checked her channel out. She had 1k subscribers and only 3 videos posted. I subscribed her to her channel anyways and continued to watch her content until her "retirement".
