What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Multiple instances of doxxing / showing IRL information of girls who left / graduated, restrictive and or limited support, and some other shit that's gone around.

though, if i declined in the end... would that negatively impact my current standing? would i be blacklisted from everything? maybe i should have thought it out more... uh oh

>> No.23914830

Your thumbnail for this video is actually fine (look for "Iron Lung is terrifying" on YT and the thumbnail is similarly simple and striking). Your title is what needs work: instead of what you have, try something that generates some curiosity, like "This game has no right to be this horrifying", with the game's title on the thumbnail, or keep the thumbnail as is, and think up of something else.
In truth, it's only expected that you won't get much traffic with a long form playthrough like this. Better would be to talk about the game after playing, like doing a review, and putting segments of your gameplay commentary to illustrate whatever point you'll be talking about.
I can't listen to the video right now, but other anons gave some suggestions there.
There's also the fact that YT content takes a while to incline, I took a few months uploading in a very narrow niche to get around 5k views on my videos, but I deviate from that niche just a tiny bit, and boom, 200 views tops. So just hang in there

Good for you anon! Hope you get an interview! And no, it shouldn't show any bad blood by declining as long as you are professional. You are applying basically for an entertainer position, so just be sure to be somewhat professional about it since the company SHOULD be showing professionalism back after all!
Stuff like "I'm sorry, these terms and conditions don't fit my scope of what I want for a contract, so I'll have to decline at this time" or "Is there any way we can discuss x y and z on this further?" shows not only being interested, but also not letting them walk all over you.
If you decline but still want them in your field of view just say that you would want to keep in contact for future talks or something, whether it be maybe future waves, re-discussion of contract or etc.

Not even remotely the same. We all understand that there are only a few schizos, some people trying to be funny or edgy, but the rest are normal. Normies on the other hand see 4chan as a unified community as represented by the worst of /pol/, /b/, and /v/. Other platforms are toxic but keep the appearance of being neutral platforms. You might also encourage some dense people to use """gamer words""" in your chat or text to speech donations just because they think you're like them, making the same kind of assumption about communities as normies do. In another timeline it wouldn't be so bad and 4channers could keep their power level in check, but in this timeline it's a needless cause of potential trouble.

This isn't even a thing any more, it hasn't been for years. Every single service auto-censors these and typically have auto-mod on for chat by default. You have to actively allow people to spam slurs in your chat for the most part.

Realistically there is zero chance anything actually impactful happens from being associated with this place but the perception this place has with MOST of the internet it's understandable why people err on the side of caution even if it's ultimately pointless.

Nobody likes that in the real world beyond the 4chan larping, you're going to be in the severe minority. In that case you should focus on it like the alt-right content creators do, reacting to all the outrage at some comic book character being gay or some shit.

If you don't want to focus on the kind of content then maybe it's better to manage impressions so people wont associate you with it. Regardless of if you are left, right, or not even involved in American politics.

That's definitely the right mindset to have. Don't dump money into it if you don't even like streaming. I'd either get a cheapish png commission (half body or chibi), or buy some ready to use cheap nizima / booth l2d and try streaming for 1-3 months. If you feel you really enjoy it and don't get burnt out, aim for the skies! I'd aim for a good half into model and front facing assets (overlays, emotes, and etc once you hit affiliate) and the other half on equipment behind the scenes stuff like mic others if you want to spend it all, but there's tons of ways to save and slowly upgrade as you go along. You don't need to dump everything into your budget right from the beginning. Best of luck!

If you already have an idea for the type of character you want and or design, you could honestly just made something out of a picrew https://picrew.me/ for free and then give it to the person making your png and that would save some money.
If you have no idea about anything and are fine with some money dumping before fully diving in, get a character / ref sheet and then ask if the person your commissioning could also do a pngtuber with it (they might discount and throw it in as a deal if they're nice enough).
Usually character ref sheets and designs run about 150$ from what I see, but just look around on twitter a bit or maybe in https://vtuber.gg/ through peoples carrds and see if they also do character design.

The one odd tradeoff of having so much to invest initially is that the higher your budget is, typically the higher the waitlist is for for riggers/artist in that price range. You could spend 2k on a Live2D that takes months for you to get the art from since you're on a waitlsit, meanwhile something in the 500-1k price range of decent quality you'd get a lot faster assuming the artist isn't just a popular one that undercharges. I've seen artists like Kamochiru with months-long waitlists with prices that are 5k+ for a full body since you're getting something fairly high quality.

As a general rule, the more money you invest into art assets, the longer you'll probably end up having to wait until you can actually even stream with them. High quality art and high quality rigging mean waiting for a slot and then for the artist to finish, and assuming the artist is also doing the design as well, you don't even have a design handy to have other art assets created to match. In all honesty even with 5k to invest into Vtubing, I'd maybe alot 2k or so at most to Live2D+Rigging and go pre-made for the as much of the assets as you can and just spend the rest on things like whatever hardware you need and editors (once you get used to streaming), and just general character art commissions. This is all assuming you give it a shot and even enjoy it to begin with of course.

Commentary style is fine, but you need to put more emphasis on what you feel or your thoughts about the game instead of just "It's scary, it's fun" and went on to narrate every little detail about the game.
Also cut on the f words and only use those in critical points because the more f words you use, the more you cut all the tension and your message and personality gets lost. Think of it like typing fuck for every few words you type in 4chan, people won't get whether you're complaining, joking, angry, or anything in between

Hey so curious, anyone know how the eroge streamer market is? What are some big names I could research in that community? I'm not really sure what streaming sites are really best for NSFW content.
I was thinking I could start as an eroge vtuber and I could use lovense products for stream interaction. Or I'd play regular games but still have the toys so viewers could fuck with me... Literally?

Is there a market for that? Would it be a bad idea to have this as a v-tuber origin story if I did want to eventually leave the NSFW sphere after a year or two?
The idea has been swirling in my head for a few months now, but I just don't quite know how I should pull it off... So, that said, I'd like to see who my competition could be and see what they've been doing

Dealing with what? Quite literally nothing happening aside from a few people who you would've otherwise never associated with not wanting to talk to you? Nothing will happen whatsoever. You will not be known as the "4chan vtuber", and you will not get any repercussions. No one has and ever will.

Dead, no one uses the few sites you can stream it on. It's a complete waste of time unless you're a girl masturbating in which case why bother with the game to begin with. There's no competition because there's no money in it unless you're the aforementioned girl masturbating, and you don't need a game to do that.

It's a niche in a niche market, so it's basically dead and you have to either be an semi known e-whore or a camboy.
Only one I could find that's even slightly similar is this streamer, who's twitch partner but switches between this and chaturbate for the nsfw / lewds.

She wasn't some random indie vtuber with a dream, she dumped tens of thousands of dollars into a project and had a manager and some of the best tech help she could get, along with a ton of people willing to work with her because she was the "first" virtual camwhore. Aside from her, all the other people who have been successful doing similar things are girls who show their IRL bodies or career VAs that already have a following.

I only bring it up because I browse regular cam girl shit and they're so incredibly boring most of the time. The game adds excitement and stakes or it can be fun to go along with the streamer on their journeys. The usual appeal of gamer let's plays? Coupled with it being porn. Isn't that the best of both worlds for some people? And people love to try and mess streamers up during hard games, so wouldn't streaming a hard game and having a lush or something going be a great idea? And yes, I'm a girl. But I imagine I could get so much farther ahead in the NSFW streaming meta if I had actual content.

One thing I'm undecided on is if I should have all assets be 2D and drawn (so when the toy goes off there's an animation for my character) OR if I would do a full IRL cam... Or if I should just start with the former and maybe build up to the later if there's interest.

Worse comes to worse, I can come out as a gaming only streamer and use a slight voice/pitch changer. It's definitely not lost on me that dipping into NSFW could have risks and downsides in the long run, but I'm an artist. I've been aware of this for years and I just don't care anymore. And I think this idea would keep me open to being able to play non NSFW games too. Could even be a good milking strategy if sex toys are always fucking me up in game and making me play even longer.

No, at that point it's breaking the illusion. The key thing is to give a decent performance for your audience whether you're genuinely new to something or not. For some people that's playing dumb and mispronouncing something in a silly way or pretending they don't know something obvious, for others it's the opposite.

> I just don't see why gamer girl sex game streamers aren't already a growing market
A girl just sitting there playing videogames isn't sexy, as much as neckbeards try and say it is. Adding masturbating to it really doesn't bring much to it when you could just focus on the masturbation aspect. There's not much "personality" you can add to it either without a full setup like melody, she basically has the market cornered outside of a few VAs and normal ewhores that picked up Vtubing. If she had been 2D that would've been dead in the water after a week or two.

All well and good for a 2 person convo between known friends. That does nothing for group collabs with basically strangers. There are plenty of people with bad chemistry who can talk without overlap. Fucking how?

>I mean all it takes is for some vtweeter with 1k~5kish followers and enough vitriol to start sending their fans to come attack aspies
No, it really doesn't. Again it's not something has has or will ever happen unless that person is openly posting a bunch of racial slurs or something while also posting bananas to somehow prove it's them. Nothing will come of it and there's no V-Tweeter boogeyman that will do anything to impact you, your following, or your content unless you've actually done something to another person directly. You're imagining a scenario that will not occur, and again there's already been a list of "4chan" vtubers as well as several who were outed when Cimrai had her fit.

Why are you worried about these to begin with, there's no reason to do them so there's nothing to worry about.
>Fucking how?
This seriously sounds like a you problem, not something that's commonly occurring. Either you're just overthinking it because you're awkward or you've got 9000 ping and it makes you talk over people

I also watch other aspies to get a sense on how I would be at the very beginning and learn from the inclining ones.
I'm still waiting for my commission tho.

You either bull through them, or let them bull through you. This is why collabs are less manic when only one of you is streaming it - if you're both live, then you both need to be entertaining. If one of you is live, and one's a guest, then you know who the spotlight should be on.

She has had like 5000 fits over the course of her career, you gotta be more specific

It was the first time she was posted to 4chan and started shitting all over /here/ chuubas and viewers, it took Eira messaging her to make her recant but by then several /wvt/ chuubas had been outed directly to her and her audience. I recall multiple people pointing out Crimbo ,who she collabed with several times, was known to post there frequently amongst others who she was already following.

is a wolf/coyote vtuber a good idea? not in a furry sense, going for an outdoorsy, gritty vibe.

dogchuubas are very common since it's a safe design, so being outdoorsy and gritty is an okay twist to it.

ok, what about atmospheric streams, live music playing? im thinking of having some nice animated backgrounds with some sounds and i play some accompanied music. kind of a way for me to practice my playing, might make acoustic/forest covers of pop songs/anime music later on.

is doing music for streams like playing out in the streets, people just come in for a bit and maybe donate some spare change?

Atmospheric streams are fine but definitely don't make it your main thing. Viewers of that kind of content leave when you're doing anything else. Like the asmr chuubas whose numbers tank when they play games or try to vary their content.

okay, so should i do a debut or just start streaming if ive never done this before? like it seems if you do a debut you kinda have to have your foot deep in the water already, all your shit is prepared well in advanced, and my musical performance cant be shit since id be playing an instrument so mistakes will be worse. if i were to have mistakes then i cant go with such a serious tone of a character, id have to bring it down a bit, make it a little goofy... if that makes sense? i want to be immersive but i just dont know how i can pull it off as someone just getting into it after watching vtubers for the past couple years.

>> No.23936007

>>23935943
Start streaming to gain experience.
Do a debut after you get a new model/gained a big enough audience that would care/did a milestone
You have to be entertaining, dont be too serious either.

>> No.23936163

>>23936007
would i need to be out there promoting myself through social media/youtube? that experience also goes with an active chat and communicating with the audience. idk how long it takes to build up like 5-10 consistent viewers, but just streaming on twitch wouldnt be it?

>> No.23936229

>>23936163
Generally speaking you should be doing those things but there are people who dont and get 10 viewers anyways through word of mouth where their friends introduce your stream to others if youre good enough.

A debut can work as your first stream, but it's not likely to.

The idea of doing a debut as your first stream is a corpo thing, where they introduce a newly franchised streamer to their audience of several thousand. It helps you know "Oh, this girls gonna be playing a lot of minecraft, karaoke, and card-based games".
This works because the corpos are (relatively) insular, they share a LOT of viewers. They share fans, and whilst those fans have favourites, it's likely they watch multiple HoloLive chuubas. Some people ONLY watch HL. So if you like Ame and Gura, you might watch the debut for Rrat and Fauna, so see if you also like them. On top of that, the existing talents hype the newer ones.

For indies, you have none of that. You won't debut to thousands of adoring fans, you won't have everyone hyping you up, and you won't be able to go full time (unless you're an existing content creator. Given you came here to ask if you should debut, I'll assume you're not).

As a PERFECT example, let's look at Nana. She was the recent chuuba who had HUGE numbers pre-debut from using the Jenny pre-made model.
https://sullygnome.com/channel/nana_sanada/180/streams
She debuted to an average of less than 90.
That's pretty good figures! A lot of people struggle to hit the 75 CCV needed for Partner.
But nearly every single stream since then has been to fewer and fewer viewers. Latest was 19CCV. That's still good, for someone who's been streaming for under 2 months, but shows she was a flash in the pan (like the paper guy who rage quit, I can't even remember his name).

Start streaming, get some experience under your belt. Maybe hype your first stream with a week's worth of notice, and you might get some people excited to come. Build some contacts, and schedule your 'debut' for a month or two after starting at earliest, to make sure you like streaming.
If you want, schedule it after hitting affiliate, because that way you can get bits and subs thrown your way, which people will do on a celebratory stream!

Because of how debuts work and their original purpose most/all indie debuts are just larps.

>> No.23936784

It has never been about that.

A debut is an idol thing. It is when you do your first performance. They would do that no matter how few people show up.

I've never been interested in the idol scene, so (serious question) do you get indie idols, in the way you get indie chuubas?

From what I can see, Corpo chuubas are aping corpo Idols; and indie chuubas are aping corpo chuubas

>> No.23937033

>do you get indie idols
Yeah, there's a whole indie/underground idol scene. Typically it's much more organized than an indie vtuber, there's even the equivalent of mini-corpos in the form of indie idol labels.

>Corpo chuubas are aping corpo Idols
I don't keep up as much with the idol scene, but I'm fairly sure this isn't true.

>indie chuubas are aping corpo chuubas
I can tell you with absolute certainty that this isn't true just by looking at the numbers. There's maybe a dozen or so Vtubers with numbers comparable to corporate chuubas.

>>23936956
they are usually "underground" doing live performances on shitty stages, talking to fans and selling bad merch. It is like eerily the same with 5view groomers, "I just want to see them succeed" people, and random people who just stumbled in.

interesting/funny thing that just happened to me: was browsing my discord friends list (on my non-vtuber discord account) and saw someone i couldn't remember, their profile looked like a vtuber profile

checked our message history and it's one of my irl friends from school, she became a vtuber

and coincidentally streams/is in the community of the same small game i'm planning to stream frequently

at least if i ever break opsec to her it'll be mutually assured destruction

Yes you can get indie idols. Dear Stage probably isn't considered indie anymore but they used to be an idol maid cafe and launched several acts including Dempagumi. They probably had some debut performances for lineups/groups owing to owning the venue. As an extension of other market events to generate interest in new products it makes more sense for a company to do debuts. Another example is online niconico douga singers, they didn't have debuts, it didn't make sense.
