as far as i can tell, from days of watching and reporting the spam in #drawmei, the spambot is set to post over and over again and delete the spams quickly, probably to avoid detection. it also sets some restrictions on who can reply to the tweet, again probably to avoid the compromised accounts being alerted by people replying to them. the deletion delay seems to vary a lot, from only a few seconds to several hours, so sometimes you can batch up three spams in one report. the problem in the hashtag results is that the way twitter's storage works, this leaves "tombstone" records in the search index, and search results are paginated in a way that still counts those deleted spams as part of the result set it returns. because the spam bot posts so much faster than legitimate traffic, it dominates the search index and quickly pushes everything that should be in "latest" out of the results, leaving only a small number of posts or nothing at all.
