What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I'm always taking so long to respond...

I haven't been working in the industry since like 2014, and even for that time i've been always kinda old-fashioned. Photoshop has been first and foremost a photo editing program, but it's since then grown to be able to sort of everything. It's not perfect for the job, but for small scale like a chuuba making his silly graphics for his silly streams it's perfectly adequate.

Figma looks to be pretty neat if you have a team because adobe's ecosystem is honestly pretty shit and always has been. At least i have never even seen anyone open bridge ever. I think for a single person it is probably a little overkill in terms of conceptualization / brainstorming features. It's really good when you have ultra minimalized workflow to be able to go through many iterations of your design with many people or even by yourself. Depending on your proficiency with photoshop you can probably get pretty fast too. I managed to whip up the schedule from scratch within a 2 hour stream and i think that's a decent time, especially since i'm a little rusty. (and this is a minimalistic version from what i'm planning to use in the future once my model changes) For people just getting into this stuff i'd probably also recommend getting into new tools i will probably die with a badly magic wand'ed "RIP" cropped onto my gravestone and a pirated copy of CS3 in my cold dead hands. (I've recently switched to PS2020 though)

Okay i'll go to bed now, be nice /asp/.

Is there any specific protocol for react type content?
It just seems so questionable to restream someone else's content. I don't feel so bad about, say, meme compilations, but then I see Veibae watching food channels and are you supposed to ask for permission (even as a 2 view) or does twitch literally not care?
I'm sure the hard limit comes from actual copyrighted shows/movies, but I'm not sure about educational or creative youtube channels.

Nope, Twitch and most channels don't seem to really care. A few have even acknowledged it as a joke. Make a playlist of videos you enjoy, throw em on and drop some commentary and jokes over it and maybe discuss a bit with your chat. Rarely if ever does any channel come forward to strike creators big or small. I can't say I've heard of it happening.

Don't. On a serious note. I'm not trans but effeminate, so gay guys and gay guys in denial really like me. Honestly. Starts to get a biiit creepy. I've made tens of thousands off of whales but it's just like idk their constant horny posting gets annoying. I charge them a few hundred per hour with me, not explicitly sexual and I'll try to legitimately show interest in their hobbies and jobs and life, they just ignore it and instantly thirst. The constant trying to meet up and fuck you is annoying, mainly because none of them are hot. It can be profitable and guys have a pretty strong bonner motivator, so they always show up in streams. I guess pick your poison. If you really want to go down this path it doesn't take much. Just be open, don't speak negatively about any of their stuff. And make them think they're the only one. It's been incredibly profitable for me and I'll always take the bag, but eh. It also can be a bit hot being a high paid whore but your milage may very.

I like the premise of GFE/BFE but oftentimes its intentionally vague on details/intimacy so anyone can self-insert which I understand but still dislike as a watcher. So I guess my real question is should I bother trying to overcome that or just not do it.

Anons, I've been thinking about what "networking" really means as a beginner vtuber, so I'm going to ramble a bit.

I'm a pretty well adjusted person, socially. I can get along with people pretty easily and I don't have qualms about saying hello to people and chatting. I don't view these interactions as business because I only do this with people I am genuinely interested in, which is pretty normal and healthy for a person to do.

My concern is really just the fact that I am a person who gets very invested into interpersonal relationships and can't handle more than a couple of super close ones at a time. There's just not enough time or energy in the day.

As I type this out, I'm starting to realize the answer to my problem. Networking isn't about making friends, necessarily. That's something that can happen along the way, but it's not the goal. Networking is about putting yourself out there so that people can beclme aware that you exist and have a history. This will make you seem more reliable in the future when you do want to reach out to other people.

Welp. May as well post this, hopefully someone here can benefit from seeing my thought process/conclusions. Sorry for being dumb, anons!

Some people are only awkward in public. I use to be in the con scene and there'd be those who were the most outgoing and helpful people online and as soon as you meet them IRL they're super reserved and quiet. Most people's internet interactions while obviously behind the barrier of being online are usually specifically catered to likeminded individuals so there's already that baseline of things you have in common.

If someone produced content then they own the rights to that content. They might give a license that allows rebroadcating or they might not. If they don't then the question is whether or not they will make a claim to the rights of their content.

People get confused about DMCA and fair use. Let me spell it out as it actually is. DMCA is a protocol put in place so that content hosts can protect their asses from legal liability. They're not deciding the legal status, if they get a DMCA takedown request they must comply, if the request is disputed they restore the content. If the complainant reasserts that they actually do have rights to the content then the accused can once again assert that no infact they have a right to use the content. Then it goes to court.

When you are in court and paying lawyers a shit load of money, then you can make a fair use defense. That's that.

Now some platforms do a load of other bullshit. Like muting, demonetizing, banning, suspending, or making deliberations on how likely something is fair use. That is all bullshit. The platform decides to do that on their own and it depends on how much weight they have to throw around and how easily they can get away with things.

Keep in mind that everything is copyrighted. Your broadcast of you watching content is also copyrighted. A big shocker might be that games are copyrighted material too. What it all comes down to is how likely are you to assert and defend your copyright. How likely are you to actually take it to court? If you're watching content from a small struggling content creator then under these laws you are illegally stealing their content, true, but they can't do shit. So is it really copyrighted if they can't defend their rights?

Some idiots will say don't worry bro I'll pay you in exposure. This would be fine if that is what both parties had agreed to before hand and signed a contract. the fact is they can't do shit about it even if they wanted to and it's best to make the most of the bs exposure they get than get all legal and ethical. Another argument is that streamers are grassroots and small time and shouldn't be subject to such laws. This is untrue, they are like contractors of giant corporations such as Amazon and Google that are making profits on their work even if their work contains material for which they don't have the rights. Corporations ought to be liable, in turn they get pissed at their users/contractors.

> If you're watching content from a small struggling content creator then under these laws you are illegally stealing their content, true, but they can't do shit. So is it really copyrighted if they can't defend their rights?

Technically you just DMCA takedown whoever is rebroadcasting your stream. You can do that to anyone who opens your twitch stream on their twitch stream.

>> No.23104491

>>23104252
tl;dr

watch all the youtube videos you want, you'll only get in trouble if it's deemed to be "too much" of a TV show and even then the odds of being caught are obscenely low

>> No.23104781

>>23104371
Right but you can DMCA anyone even if you don't own the rights. It's the next few steps where the rights are disputed that it gets settled. That Twitch or another platform has something like that put in place for other streams is a platform decision. DMCA itself is platform agnostic.
>>23104491
Nope. You always have to understand that you're infringing on rights as they are right now. Not getting any repercussions today does not mean that tomorrow there is no grounds for repercussions. Do it but don't cry or be shocked if it changes later on.

Probably the biggest reason for the change in how Twitch has to handle music is because record companies looked at Bezos being so rich and decided he could stand to pay his way. When that happens streamers that are like contractors for these big corporations are caught in the crossfire. So being a small streamer isn't going to save you when the big boss is being an asshole.

This might sound really unrealistic today but it could happen tomorrow. Imagine if a company like Nintendo or Sony looked at Amazon Game Studio and was not happy. Maybe they might decide that the parent company should not profit by being allowed to rebroadcast and advertise over their games made for the same market in which they're competing. It's something to always keep in the back of your mind.

For small content creators sure, they're never going to take you to court, they can't afford it. You win and lose by default.

Can you imagine if Nintendo (well, not them, because they're shit at ideas, but Microsoft maybe?) spun up a streaming platform, and DMCAed everyone who put nintendo content anywhere else?

You play pokemon? Copyright strike. You play pokemon music? Copyright strike.

It's about the only situation I could see another streaming platform possibly succeeding, and that's only if they can ride out the initial hate

>> No.23105156

>>23104875
I mean it really depends because lets say Amazon Games starts competing directly with Sony's biggest franchises. Then during streams of Sony's games the streams are spammed with ads for Amazon's game. Will they shut up and take it like a good little bitch? I don't know, maybe they will or maybe they will demand money which Twitch could take from the streamers. But anything is possible.

Youtube could change their tune and act more like a publisher taking a collective complaint to Twitch. That would impact react streamers and it's possible because the liability does exist.

It might all seem excessively stating the obvious but I just remember how a low of streamers reacted when the music thing went down, like they didn't understand.

Just always keep it in mind and you wont get blindsided.

>> No.23105583

Oh for sure, you can throw invalid DMCAs. I'm just saying that is how everyone SHOULD think about it.

>you rebroadcast ANY CONTENT you don't own or have a license for on your channel the rights holder can DMCA you

If I was an evil dick I would set up a farm of low-cost workers that scanned twitch for "media share" and other react content, have them record anyone with significant viewership for months, then bring all of it to a copyright law firm. Easy money.

ignore this.

Whatever you do just dont mention your partner. If people ask you can be open with it. If you're female, people do NOT want to hear about the partner even if you have one but you can still grow even if the knowledge is out. VividlyVivi and Shylily are doing incredibly well and it's well known that they have boyfriends but as long as they dont mention it in their streams and focus on being entertaining, the people watching them are happy enough because they just want the illusion of a cute girl. On the other hand, Veibae had a big decline when she constantly mention her boyfriend sodapoppin nonstop in her streams which just destroyed the illusion of her goslings forcing them to look elsewhere for something else.

Overall it's not career ending, it's not something you should advertise but it's not something you should take every attempt to hide either.

I've gotten plenty of constructive criticism and so have others, just not everyone here is wiling to supply it so you have to get lucky or just persist until you get it. I'll throw my hat in the pile and give some because i've been lurking in some /asp/ies streams and while it's only my opinion of course, i'd still like to talk about it.

I've been to mashi's stream a couple times and what eventually makes me click away is definitely the fact that i can't understand her. The voice itself doesn't really do anything for me (i'm a raging homo sorry <3), but i do understand it has a certain appeal. If you have ever been in a 1on1 call with someone that has such a thick accent that you have to keep asking to repeat themselves it gets to a point where you are just uncomfortable as a listener. I wished i could just understand everything mashi is saying but i just can't. But as a viewer i also can't keep telling her to repeat herself, so i have two choices: accept it and just listen to her mumble along or i leave. I've noticed this problem with alto_tiro's stream too, it's a little less bad but he also has the tendency to speed up and i have a hard time making out what he's saying.

This problem gets exponentially worse if the streamer is talking to me directly. What reaches my ear is "hi truekaiser ajflasjlfjaeljljlafl" and that really puts me in a difficult spot and makes me very nervous because i have no idea what to do. I might be alone on this, but it's what i've had experienced. Maybe not being native english speaker further reduces my ability to understand english, but i believe i'm rather proficient at it regardless. Obviously a lot of viewers are okay with just listening and not interacting (like in ASMR streams) and that's totally fine too, but i think mashi doesn't want to go full rarted and be a more classical streamer.

Now this has been said a lot and the biggest problem is how to fix it. It requires practise in speaking english and speaking clearly which is effort that might be hard / annoying to do and i totally understand someone not wanting to commit to that. I feel like that could be alienating a lot of potential viewers. I think the best option to mitigate it would be listening to yourself a lot and maybe try to slow down a little.

But then again this point has been made a lot, so this is moot. I consider my voice to be hard to listen to, but people seem to like it. I will try to continue adjusting my voice, but it's been pretty tough. Maybe i should play around with post-processing on the audio.

You do a good job actually explaining what the issue is in words, rather than just "she's got a mushy voice".

But you're also exactly right. Her english is good, but her accent is enough that I have to actively pay attention to get everything, or accept that I won't be able to understand all the words.

i don't hate babies by any stretch. i've been tempted to get my own fem model (although i can't do girlvoice).
there's two different 'problems' I've seen.
1 - "they're trans!".
the streamer might not be trans. they might be cis het man. that doesn't change the fact that they're effectively wearing women's clothing and body, which is often seen as crossdressing, or a step on the path to transdom (i know, it sounds stupid, but still).
2 - it's a sex thing
some babis go for overly sexualised designs. Huge tits and hips, stripper-style string clothes, fuck-me boots, over done make-up (this is also seen in some transchuubas). think like silvervale (who uses trans colors in her design).

It was less the vtuber design issues and more the "practical" issues that came up with the first draft, which was the sans helmet version. If all games were like this, I'd buy all the games I like, but the profit margin for selling literal nothingness is too huge for the publishers to give up on and the piracy they cause by doing so is a convenient scapegoat.

-the face is important, think about what makes an appealing face and what style you want. i would personally make the eyes more detailed and cater a bit more to a specific tyow of character, again reference attractice characters and understand why they look good

-stop so liberally airbrushing. this is one of the biggest beginner painter mistakes. i know the smoothness and the instantly created form looks cool, but its a crutch and kills all the detailed and subtle form change within the subject. begin with hard brush cell shading, then go back and soften some parts

-try to apply line weight, lines for establishing shape and from should be darker and details like creases should be lighter, this one is hard to verbalize but you can look at a lot of manga art and see what they darken with lines

If you are even mildly successful as a vtuber people are bound to give you money in donos or subs. I just don't get why you're so against the idea, to the point of calling your potential audience retards.

My reasoning is that money has value and that to spend it on something that thing has to match that value. When you pay for a subscription you don't actually buy a product but the limited right to access something, maybe, sometime. And as soon as you stop paying, you have nothing to show for the money you spent.

No, I was talking about the food. Yes you're wasting money in theater. The experience is absolutely atrocious most of the time because of the other people and the price is long past inflated beyond what is reasonable to pay for it. You're a cuck.

Thank you, that's just the kind of feedback I was looking for. I'm going for a n android aesthetic, so I'm okay if things are little off as long as it isn't too jarring. I've only been drawing digitally for a few months now, so even just getting out something that looks half decent has been encouraging.

From the recent tsunderia grads.
Tldr- small corpos are completely worthless and actively hold you back. It's more work to get things done (covers, merch, sponsorships) while in the corpo than indie.

Tltldr don't go corpo unless it's big 3.

That seems weird unless they are running it badly.

You should just be running a talent agency providing support staff. Getting anything done should be easier, since you can potentially provide package deals.

Supposedly. But none of them really give a shit.
Plus from a previous prism stream, all the talents are their own agents. They're essentially hired contractors not employees of the company.

The small corps are all just scams since none of them actually give you anything of value in return for their cut of the money.
Maybe Cyberlive but only cause you can just lmao and leave with the model.

You’re making too much sense for that dumb asshole to read. They’re the morally superior pirate, bro.
We all pirate things, but to insist that only tangible and highly reusable things hold monetary value is a bit more austere of an outlook on life than the one I hold. I feel like it also makes perfect sense to pay for experiences or to patronize artists that you enjoy.
