I leave my PC on 24/7 and eat near it, not on top of it. Mine still works. Though I did have a faulty GPU at one point, it didn't die, it just overheats a lot and I assume i could just replace the thermal paste, but i bought a better GPU anyway and now it's just in a box.

Nah that's snake oil these days. Modern desktop PSUs are switching supplies which means they can handle a wide range of voltages and convert them on the fly. Even with a power surge, North American voltage is far lower than what PSUs are rated for.

It's more likely she did some retarded hikki shit like let dust build up and burn out one of her fans.

Also could just be a bad stick of RAM. Consumer grade volatile memory still has a field failure rate of 1 in 1400. It's not inconceivable she just got unlucky.

With memory troubleshooting, you always go to DIMM1 on channel A and test one DIMM at a time to determine if any DIMMs are faulty and if the issue resides the slots.
Memory controller is only a suspect if you test the memory elsewhere and it comes back with a clean bill of health on the other system and problem doesn't reside with any of the slots.
This is a problem with factory overclocked memory using XMP/AMP profiles which tend to overvolt the memory controller on CPU.
